Ook dit tweede deel over de geschiedenis van de Normandiërs in Zuid-Italië en Sicilië werd door Norwich met heel wat zwier en enthousiasme geschreven. Hij kan zijn bewondering voor de hoogdagen van het multiculturele Koninkrijk Sicilië maar met moeite bedwingen tijdens het schrijven. Meestal blijft hij zo dicht mogelijk bij de feiten wanneer het er op aan komt om een oordeel uit te spreken over een van de vele historische figuren die de revue passeren. Maar wanneer hij het over de architectuur heeft, laat hij zijn voorkeur voor de typisch Normandisch-Siciliaanse bouwstijl de vrije loop en betreurt hij de aanpassingen die latere eeuwen deden aan deze gebouwen maakten.
Norwich erkent dat het Sicliaanse koninkrijk mogelijk al van bij aanvang het zaad van zijn eigen destructie in zich meedroeg omdat het te heterogeen, te eclectisch, en te kosmopolitisch was. Maar... "But nations should be judged on their achievements rather than on their lapses, and to the very end Norman Sicily stood forth in Europe - and indeed in the whole bigoted medieval world - as an example of tolerance and enlightenment, a lesson in the respect that every man should feel for those whose blood and beliefs happen to differ from his own." (p. 391) En zo sluit Norwich ook dit tweede deel af met een tijdloze boodschap. ( )

Muy bueno, qe bien que escribe este tipo. se lee casi como una novela de aventuras. Con gracia, ironía, y con agudza. Cubre el breve lapso del reino normando en el sur de Italia. Es en definitiva la historia de eso estads fracasados pero si hubieran persistido hubieran cambiando en mucho la Historia, cuatro culturas que chocan se mezclan consiguen convivir y conseguir grande cosas, pero condenado el experimento a fracasar desde el vamos. una pena, Griegos, arabes, el remanente latino de italia y aparcen estos herederos de los vikingos. ( )

Per chi ha voglia di approfondire quanto non è stato scritto nei libri di scuola, un bel libro piacevole dal leggere e ricco di considerazioni dell'autore. ( )

The Kingdom in the Sun 1130-1194, by John Julius Norwich (30 Sep 1973) In June of 1963 I read with tremendous enjoyment Norwich's The Other Conquest and this is a sequel to that, and I enjoyed this even more. Norwich's books are not scholarly, but do rely on scholars. And the story told is sheerly fascinating This book begins with the crowning of Roger de Hautville as King of Sicily in Palermo Cathedral on Dec 25, 1130, and continues thru 1194 when the reign of the Normans in Sicily ended with the deposition of William III by Emperor Henry VI. Norwich makes history live and throb! ( )
