A hiking trip in the woods in upstate New York is out of the comfort zone for sixteen-year-old city girl Callie Velasquez, but she wants to bond with her new friends Lissa and Penelope, not to mention her new boyfriend, Jeremy. Oh, My Gosh! I thought the book, "What Waits in the Water" was good. This put a whole new spin on stalkers and mental illness. I truly didn't see what was coming straight at me. The story builds up in layers. All the way through I kept thinking, so ____ is the killer, only to find out I was wrong. The story starts very uniquely. You have someone in a mental facility telling you the doctor keeps asking them "why". They believe the answer is very obvious. So you don't know the gender of the person in the mental facility which is why I didn't see their identity coming at me. Everyone was suspect. You have three girls going on a camping trip. Callie is new to the group and trying to push herself out of her comfort zone. The other two, Lissa and Penelope have been best friends for a long time. Then you have Jeremy, Callie's boyfriend who has tagged along. This makes Lissa's boyfriend Zach upset. He decided to prank them and show up anyway. Then there is Ted, someone they just met who tells them he will lead them to his cabin where they can call their parents. Someone in this group is lying. When the first person is killed, the others must try to figure out who it is before they all lose their lives. ( )

Great pacing, nice tension, plenty of suspense and a good twist! Would read more from this author! ( )

My, my, this book was awful. The plot was fine, but the character development was atrocious. The main characters were self absorbed, whiny, and full of petty drama, even when they were supposedly running for their lives. I have to admit, after the first six chapters, I skimmed the book for a while and then just skipped to the end to find out who the killer was, which was also disappointing and totally ridiculous. Don't waste your time on this one. ( )

I found this book enjoyable and fun to read. That berry said, I now have to explain what I took issue with. There was so much teen angst and drama, I found myself seriously annoyed with the supporting characters and nearly rooting for the bad guy stalking them. The other issue is how cliche it was. I enjoy a great mystery and especially YA mysteries because they tend be pretty thrilling. But this was so cliche with the twists that I knew what was coming and that, my friends, is not thrilling. Now, I'm not saying I didn't enjoy it because I did. I totally did. And to be honest, there were a few twists that got me and that ending! Whew! But I just feel there could have been more to it. There was potential for more. ( )

I like that the main character in this book isn't the typical hero. She has no clue what she's doing in any area of her life, and doesn't seem to have any skills that would help her survive her circumstances in the book. This is only charming up to a point, then becomes annoying. For me, the redeeming factor in this book was the antagonist, who was definitely creepy and for whom it was worth hanging on til the end.
