As with her two novels about Isabella of France and Roger Mortimer, this novel about the struggles of the Welsh rebel leader and would be prince Owain Glyn Dwr against the English in the early fifteenth century is well written, evoking a tremendous sense of atmosphere and place. I enjoyed it a little less than the earlier two novels as I felt it was a bit long and repetitive in places. The Welsh characters are well drawn, the English ones less so; this is probably inevitable given the novel's focus, but I was nevertheless disappointed with the portrayal of Henry IV as a one dimensional brute, having just read Ian Mortimer's excellent and nuanced biography of that King, and a little surprised at the much more positive portrayal of the more tyrannical Richard II, though I think that is because Richard got on well with the young Prince Harry, the future victor of Agincourt, whom the author clearly likes. Overall a colourful read and much to enjoy. 3.5/5 ( ) ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse
