Katie Bonner, the reluctant manager of Artisans Alley in the quaint shopping district of Victoria Square, is no stranger to ambivalence. Things have been going hot and heavy with pizza maker Andy Rust-so much so that Katie has moved in over his pizza parlor. But now that summer's ushered in a heat wave, an apartment above pizza ovens without an air conditioner is making Katie hot and bothered. At the height of the heat wave, a tragic fire strikes Victoria Square. Wood U, a small store selling wooden gifts and small furniture, is destroyed. But the fire may just be a smoke screen-for murder. A body is found among the charred wreckage, and the victim didn't die from smoke inhalation. He was shot. Now-despite making Detective Ray Davenport hot under the collar-Katie is determined to smoke out a cold-hearted killer...… (mere)

Couldn't wait to read the 2nd novel in the Victoria Square series by Lorraine Bartlett (one of the pen names of Lorna Barnett who also writes as L.L. Bartlett).

As delightful as anticipated. ( )

Lorraine Bartlett takes on another enjoyable journey to Victoria Square and Artisan Alley. It's summer time and hotter than hot that leads Katie to a window only to find smoke coming out a neighbor's shop. Murder, short-tempers and mix-ups follow and Katie must trudge through it all to find-out who's responsible for the fire, and the murder...or is it really murder? Bartlett's stories just get better as the series continues. Fast enjoyable read. ( )

Katie Bonner is fighting the summer heat at Artisan Alley but things get worse when one of the neighboring building catches fire and its owner is apparently caught in the inferno. News comes out that the corpse was apparently shot in the head before the blaze and is unrecognizable. Was it really the owner or someone else?

Katie has to balance the AC issues in the building as well as personnel conflicts while trying to determine if the deceased was really the building owner. At the same time, her own little apartment over the pizzeria is getting hotter by the day and her hopes of ever owning a B&B are fading fast.

All the elements of the book - murder, the B&B sale, the AC problems were woven together to keep the reader moving forward anxiously trying to find the solution. ( )
