This was another great informational text about animals by Guiberson, author of the famous Cactus Hotel. Curiously, she starts this the same way as Cactus Hotel, with the same "Plop!". This is a very thorough record of emperor penguins' first year of life and first year of parenting. Very interesting book. Well worth the read. ( )

This beautifully illustrated nonfiction text describes the way emperor penguin mates share the burden of chick-care with each other. Several points of interest: These penguins can go for months without eating, the food source is often days or weeks away depending on the thickness of the ice, their chicks cannot survive the cold until their adult feathers grow in and so require constant care. The level of information is appropriate for grades one and up, and is punctuated with sound effects of whistling wind, penguin calls, and seal barks.

This book about the amazing story of Emperor Penguins – including how the father cares for the egg and young hatchling alone throughout the Antarctic winter – goes further than most other books on this topic for children. This book is appropriate for older rather than younger children, since it is a very long read. However, the length of the story allows for far more detail on this fascinating topic, including how penguin fathers work together to help each other keep the eggs warm. Review by Book Dads ( )
