In his lengthy introduction, David James Smith, a journalist for the Sunday Times, outlines the Crippen case, based on court documents and contemporary newspaper stories. Val Andrews suggests that the case would be enough to lure Holmes out of retirement, appalled that the scant evidence and questionalble court procudure during the trial had sentenced Crippen to death.
