I wasn't all that interested in the Bufkin/OZ storyline, but the one about the children in The North owned me. I love the other winds. I love the castle. I love that the minions can change shape, and what the children do. I keep rereading the little prophesy and wondering how it will all work out and go. ( )

I'm still digging Fables a lot, but I have one complaint about this last installment: The story has gotten so big that there were only a few pages at a time dedicated to all the separate plot lines-meanwhile, back in New York...meanwhile, back in Oz...meanwhile back in the north...meanwhile back at the farm. The result is that the story for each plot line only inches forward a bit and then the book's done. And we have to wait and wait. I don't like waiting and waiting.

(Hmmm, this reminds me of a certain George RR Martin I know, except with 1000 pages)

It's a great series, though, and I'm looking forward to the next one. Maybe if I wish hard enough it will be twice as long as this one. ( )

And now we have the fallout from [b:Fables, Vol. 16: Super Team|10974311|Fables, Vol. 16 Super Team|Bill Willingham|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1375404173l/10974311._SY75_.jpg|15892402]. North Wind sacrificed himself to defeat Mr. Dark, but in the way of these stories, there must always be a North Wind. And since there are a whole pile of direct descendents (in Bigby and Snow's children), well, perhaps one of them will become king.

If only anyone had the slightest idea how to choose which one or proove that they're actually worthwhile.

Along that line, there's a side plot about Rose Red becoming a Hope of ... something? I'm not sure what's going on here. But hey, Santa Claus.

It kind of works. But really the main plotline with the Wolfkids is better. Even if the idea of a kid becoming the North Wind is mildly bizarre. Stranger things have happened though. ( )

As the title implies, this volume focuses on which of Snow and Bigby's children will inherit the post of the North Wind. None of the Zephyrs really known how a new heir is selected, so they give the children very arbitrary tests of skills until the other reigning winds try to step in. Of course Bigby isn't big on them trying to co-opt his children for "boot camp," and surprisingly they back off when he tells them to take a hike. During one of the tests they discover that Winter can travel to the secret land which houses the box tat holds Mister Dark and the old North Wind, so they deem her the equal of her grandfather and therefore the rightful heir. I wish they would have gone into the story a little further, but such is life with graphic novels/comic books sometimes...

In the meantime, the other Fables have begun to return to the Mundy world from Haven, just in time for Christmas. They have yet to start an incursion back to New York (the old location of Fabletown), but I'm sure once they do they will find that Miss Sprat (Leigh, now) will not go quietly back to her old post as head nurse. Rose Red has also apparently gained a new magical title as a bearer of Hope, so I'm sure that plotline will get to be quite interesting. Rose isn't exactly the most stable Fable personality, so choosing a single aspect of Hope might be slightly problematic for her. ( )

Another solid entry into the series. Some of the plot in this one is predictable, but still enjoyable. Well worth the read. ( )

This volume of frosty storms and calamities is dedicated to Stephanie Cooke, with affection. - Bill Willingham
To my wonderful wife Irma, for all her love and exceptional tolerance as I juggled drawing this arc with our moving countries; and to Elena, for being equally tolerant with me as well as being the very best of friends to us both. - Mark Buckingham
