It seemed to go right from constantly butting heads to seduction to suddenly being in love. And I didn't really buy that evolution. There's also a lot of the heroine's body 'betraying her'. I'm sure some readers swoon at the idea of a man with such appeal/skill/whatever that he can always overwhelm the heroine's better judgement, etc. But it just seems like fishing in a barrel or something when the heroine is so inexperienced to begin with. It almost makes me root for her to just resist him already, especially when he acts all smug about it, and I'm usually all for the additional steam. I just wasn't very attached to either lead. Lots about auction house business and smuggling, meh. I don't regret reading it though. ( ) Emma is mourning the death of her father, running an auction house in his stead and trying to find her missing brother all on her own. Society frowns on women in authority so Emma must hide behind males to get her job done. Darius, the arrogant Earl of Southwaite discloses that he is half owner of the auction home so Emma has yet another male from whom she must hide. Emma can see no future for an average looking working woman in the life of an Earl so she strives on her own until his help becomes needed very badly. Smuggling, treason, blackmail are all woven into the story as these two distant classes and people find a way to meet in the middle. After the death of her father, Emma Fairborne tries to keep her family’s auction house open for her brother who disappeared two years prior. However, her silent partner, the Duke of Southwaite, wants to liquidate the business before his involvement in trade becomes public knowledge. As the two spar, other forces including smugglers and French spies complicate their relationship. Is Robert still alive and can Emma save him? ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse

"A woman running a prestigious London auction house? Preposterous! But that is exactly what Emma Fairbourne intends to do after her father dies and leaves her the reins of this fabulous enterprise. Of course, she is not addlepated enough to do this openly and scare away her wealthy collectors. So she and her friend concoct a deception, intending to hire a handsome and charming front man who will do her bidding. All would have proceeded smoothly--if it weren't for the maddening interference of Darius, the arrogant Earl of Southwaite, who has been her father's 'silent partner' and now shares ownership of Fairbourne's. An earl, of course, has no interest in running an auction house--and Darius is certainly not interested in allowing the lovely Miss Fairbourne to run it either, her ludicrous scheme notwithstanding. Clearly the business must be sold. But the headstrong Emma is like no other lady he has ever encountered, refusing to follow his dictates. Holding his temper in check, Darius decides to attack on a different front. There is another way to achieve her surrender, one far more pleasurable for both of them"--Publisher.
