An action-packed and introspective journey, BATMAN & SUPERMAN: WORLD'S FINEST chronicles the first ten years of the tumultuous alliance between the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight. Centered on the death of a man that the two legendary heroes failed to save, this acclaimed volume reveals new perspectives about Batman and Superman's relationship and the role they played in each other's darkest moments. Including appearances by Supergirl, Batgirl, Superboy, Catwoman, Lex Luthor, the Joker, and Two-Face, this tome features tales in which the iconic heroes deal with Superman's death, Robin's murder, Superman's slaying of three villians, and Batman's replacement as the Caped Crusader.… (mere)

I enjoyed seeing the evolution of Batman and Superman's friendship and how they interacted. The art was great as well, and the parallelism of the beginning and ending was particularly well done. [full review on my bloghref>] ( )

A somewhat flawed re-telling of how Batman and Superman first worked together, this is essentially a miniseries of stories, spaced one year apart over ten years. The premise is that Batman and Superman, on their first team-up early in their careers, somehow fail to save the life of a kidnap victim. They resolve eventually to meet on the anniversary of the victim's death, and do so over the next decade. The premise is a little convoluted, and the artwork is often not up to the standards I have come to expect from DC (ironically, the original "World's Finest" comic books, which featured Batman-Superman team-ups, often featured some of DC's lesser artists too). The conclusion is also contrived and stretches belief. But what makes this book is the interplay between the two heroes, as they learn more about each other and begin to develop a mutual respect, if not quite friendship. An intriguing storyline for this, and one which could have been much better. ( )
