Entertaining and engaging, even though something holds this short novel back - perhaps the curse of using "susurration" anywhere but particularly in the opening paragraph. There's a kind of pat-ness and characters are expendable but the story of a young theater writer/director coming into her own in more ways than one does not suffer overmuch. Also, L.A. natives will appreciate an authentic reflection of the city. (
