Fiction. Western. Thriller. HTML:

The sound of a crowded saloon . . . The cry of a train coming through the night. . . The pounding of horses ridden by friends or foe. . . From the searing sun to snow steeped winters, towns called Sentinel, Iron Mountain and St. Elmo stood strong and fierce before they finally died. Now, these ghost towns return to life under the spell of such great Western taletellers as Louis L'Amour, Elmer Kelton, William W. Johnstone, Bill Brooks, Loren D. Estleman, Johnny D. Boggs and New York Times bestseller Margaret Coel.

From a soldier on the run from the fires of war. . . From a gambler who has long since played his last hand to a solitary, singing rifle man protecting a besieged town . . . With dreamers and schemers, with men and women of courage, conscience and faith, here is an unforgettable roundup of astounding adventures fueled by a passion for the West the way it really was and the way it lives on forever. . .

Title: Ghost Towns (Short story: “The Ghosts of Duster”, pgs. 38-64)
Author: William W. Johnstone & J. A. Johnstone
ISBN: 9780786019564
Pages: 352
Year: 2010
Publisher: Pinnacle
My rating: 5 out of 5 stars.
A captivating tale that brings two of the Johnstone characters Bo Creel and Scratch Morton into a very mysterious tale. Bo and Scratch are looking for a town to stop in and pick up supplies. They aren’t sure what is going on when they ride into a town and not a soul comes out to greet or stare at them. There are no cooking fires but there is one man who comes to them yelling for them to leave! Bo and Scratch can’t do that, not because of what isn’t happening around them but because this man needs help. Why? He claims to see children and he is scared out of his wits!
Bo and Scratch begin to take care of the man when strangers come out of nowhere with pistols pointing at them and they aren’t little kids! The mystery deepens when Bo, Scratch and the stranger hear the kids but cannot see them. It sure sounds like ghosts but is it? Plus, with Bo and Scratch caught without any way to defend themselves but they figure they might as well go out fighting. What happens next brings an entertaining climactic conclusion to this tale.
Fans of Johnstone westerns or the two male characters know that you don’t want to bypass this tale!
