Via an inlaw, I came into possession of a Rand McNally and Company christmas card bearing a copy of an 1498 map of the world - as known then - map. It's in the form of a fold-out on heavy paper and bears a printed text description of the map and why it's interesting historically. The card was sent to a long term employee of Rand McNally. Presumably, most are sent to valued customers of the firm.

Searching Google hasn't produced much info. I'm just wondering if any of you map fans have any back ground into on these christmas cards. Over what period they were printed? Is there any group of collectors of these cards? Etc... The Newberry in Chicago has "85 lineal feet" of boxes, etc from Rand McNally (I live near Chicago and am a member of Newberry), but that sounds like an ordeal.

The Chicago Map Society had a 1981 meeting regarding these items and said that then they had been printed for "over 30 years."

Andrew McNally III (1909-2001) started issuing facsimiles of old maps as company Christmas greetings in 1948. The practice continued until 1995 when the last was issued. For the last 30 years or so of the series, the maps were selected and annotated by Kenneth Nebenzahl, a Chicago antiquarian bookseller and cartography expert who died in January 2020. The Newberry Library record for the series can most easily be found by going to the Newberry's online catalog, searching by "Call number browse (Other)" and typing in "RMcN Christmas."
