I am a conservationist and scientist working on making marine protected areas for whales and dolphins and other sea life. For the last decade I have also directed a project in Kamchatka, Russia, to study families of orcas, or killer whales, in their natural habitat. I am a research fellow with the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society in Britain. I am the author of 17 books for adults and children on wildlife, especially the marine side, but I have also written a narrative nonfiction book on ant societies in the neo-tropical rain forest and edited an anthology of the best writings on insects.
