William Whitaker

William Whitaker (sometimes spelled "Whitacre") was born in Lancashire in 1547. He was sent to Trinity College, Cambridge at the age of 18 by his uncle, the dean of St. Paul's. He was so proficient in languages that he regularly translated books from English into Latin and Greek. He received his vis mere Doctor of Divinity degree from Oxford. He served as a professor at Cambridge, where he was highly regarded for his studies and abilities as a teacher and preacher. Whitaker gave himself to such diligent study that it greatly affected his health. Indeed, it is said that he fell sick due to unusual fatigue and lack of sleep, and died in 1595 vis mindre
