The earliest edition of this book was 1959. An updated edition included material 2 years hence. For this book, Robert Pike came forth as a rural travelling interviewer. He encouraged those he met to reminisce about days of yore. Then he would write down as best remembered what they said in a way to make us feel we were there. The scope of subjects were wide and facts were checked when possible. History, nature, folk-lore, and occupations of the time with a special emphasis on the lumber trade is scattered throughout the pages. Some chapters may seem to go on a bit long whereas others end too early. There is basically something for everyone in this wholly enjoyable read! This is North East America as told by those who lived it. Just wait till you meet them!… (mere)
