I read this for the "Book In A Series" part of my 2020 reading challenge. It was really cute, I liked how panicked Splat got over the library fine, and his little mugshot.

Out of all the Stone arch readers I’ve read the season this one is the best. Moopy has shown up in other books, but they never said he or she. They are very adamant about saying Moopy is a “she” in this book, which is her origin story. It’s about how she makes new friends and destroys her own house. I don’t like this book, I don’t hate this book, it’s just meehhh. I was hoping for something better from Stone Arch.

This is a fun book about a being who has an extra-long tongue. I like how this book coincides with another of the Stone Arch Readers series. In this book, Snorp asks Moopy to teach him how to snowboard. But things don’t go well. The book is fun and kids will love it. Stone Arch Readers are known for being high lows meaning, highly interest, low reading level. While at a level three, this would be quite common with Step Into Reading level threes and a few others. It’s for kids reading beyond sight words. One of the things I really love about Stone Arch is naming characters things that are not sight words that must be sounded out. It’s a great way to tell if kids are reading the pictures or reading the words.

Moopy is on the beach, and all they want is to be left alone to enjoy the sun. But Ora is searching for gold and it happens to be under Moopy. Once again, these are fun stories that bring together characters from other books under the Stone Arch title. Kids will love the story and the fun and colorful illustrations.

I like how this edition starts with facts about lobsters. Even a fact I didn’t know such as lobsters have clear blood. While the illustrations are still exactly like you would see another Stone Arch books that make kids want to pick them up, to me the story is a bit lackluster. The lobster is grumpy. We’re never given a reason. Starfish asked him why he’s grumpy and instead of getting an answer he just decides he’s not going to be grumpy anymore. There’s no lesson, there’s no why are you grumpy, there’s no looking at what brings about the action to begin with. That’s probably a bit much for an easy reader but I still wish it was there.

This is a character has three claws. At first, I really liked the idea of this monster, and the reader is told right away that he’s smelly. His towns people can’t stand the smell so they come up with a job where he’ll be alone on a mountain, so nobody can smell him. Even Three Claws thinks he’ll be lonely. In this book they are ostracizing someone for being different and for that reason alone I do not like this title, and I wish it was not part of a series of books I love.

This book is recommended for primary students. This book talks about the Grand Canyon, the nature, and the geographical features surrounding it. In my future classroom, this book could be used for talking about how nature affects the wildlife that inhabits it.

This book is a informational book about the grand canyon. This book includes many facts such as the wildlife found there and some history about the grand canyon. This book also talks about things you can do at the grand canyon. This book is a good book to have in the classroom for kids who may be interested in learning about the grand canyon. This book is targeted towards primary grade students.

This is a fun informational book on how cotton t-shirts are made. Simple concept, decently executed. Organization is not the best, as it seems like sometimes there are too many words on each page. Illustrations are fine, but not super compelling. Has resources to allow for further research into the topic, which I really appreciate. This book is part of a series titled "Who Made My Stuff?" that explains how simple everyday objects are made from natural resources. Examples include how backpacks and pencils are made from nylon and wood, respectively. Kind of overshadows the fact that the cotton industry is terrible for the environment, which is unfortunate, but for a children's book, I guess this makes sense. Not the highest quality of publication in my opinion.

I enjoyed this non-fiction, informative picture book. This book talks about the three types of unicorns in folklore: European unicorns, Asian unicorns, and Southern Unicorns. Readers learn all about unicorn behavior, physical features, and special stories regarding both the Asian and European unicorn breeds. The illustrations are extremely detailed and colorful, with each color scheme in the background complimenting the color of each unicorn. For example, the Asian unicorn is in earth tones or brown, beige, and red. The background matches this with the rustic looking brown, red, and white snow-capped mountains and trees. Children learn about the unicorn life cycle, like that of horses, as well as where they can see unicorns today (in books, movies, and maybe in the woods). The end of the book includes pages about the author and the illustrator, as well as a glossary of terms used in the book, critical thinking questions, and a list of books and websites for children and their parents to look at for more information. I believe the inclusion of critical thinking questions was a great addition to the book because it asks kids to think which is a step beyond just reading. This is a quick, simple read that gives kids all the facts they could ask for about unicorns paired together with brilliant illustrations.

This is a great book for young primary readers, and it has great illustrations. This is a informational book about crocodiles and what it would be like if you met one in the wild. I would use this book for younger students when talking about science. This is a great book for students to learn about another animal that they normally wouldn't come face to face with.

The Electoral College: A Kid's Guide was the perfect book to read with our 4th-grade son who has a lot of timely questions about the election progress in the United States. I loved how the book started with the history of the electoral college and what the word democracy really means. It was a great overview of the election process and within the text gave definitions to important concepts that relate to this topic.

While this book is great for curious kids, it was also very helpful to me as an adult who can still get a little confused about the specific details about how the election process works. The photos and graphics in the book added a lot to the text and there was a great balance throughout the book between narration and helping and engaging images.

Thank you to NetGalley and Capstone Press for an advanced copy.

This is an informational book that tells kids how t-shirts are made from start to finish. I really liked this book because it draws the attention of the reader with its very detailed pictures and it is also super simple and easy for students to comprehend. I would use this book in a writing lesson about step by step instructions using transitioning words. This book is a great example of using transitions in writing!

I was super excited to see a new, easy reader series showing real kids playing sports among the review copies I received from Capstone. I have mixed feelings about it after reading it, but ultimately I'm happy to have anything along these lines to add.

The book opens with a glossary explaining a number of gymnastics terms. Mateo is part of a team of three guys, including Greyson (white, redhead) and Jordan (black). Mateo is smaller than the other two and appears to be Hispanic. Mateo is the star gymnast of their small team, until an even smaller boy, Aaron (white, black hair) shows up. Mateo gets jealous of his abilities and during their gymnastics meet shows poor sportsmanship. Some words from their coach and Aaron's kindness help him regain his equilibrium and they end up working together as a team.

The text isn't particularly inspired, but for that rare bird, a realistic sports story for beginning and intermediate readers, featuring a diverse group of kids no less, I won't be picky. I was a little surprised that the set covers lesser-known sports, including boys' gymnastics, tae kwon do, and t-ball, but it's great to have a range to present to that one kid who doesn't want soccer, football, or basketball. The illustrations are simple digital cartoons and add some emotional depth to the story.

The reading level is intermediate, for kids who are reading almost-chapter books like Frog and Toad or National Geographic. This is available in an (expensive) library bound or in paperback editions. I rarely purchase library bound titles for the easy readers, since I expect them to get a lot of hard use and be ready to be replaced, especially on the inside, before the outer binding wears out, but these fill an important niche in collections and are worth purchasing.

Verdict: With so few sports stories for beginning readers, especially featuring a diverse range of kids, this is worth purchasing if you can afford it.
