Jenny McCarthy

Confession: I didn't finish it. The entire book was written in a question and answer style with Jenny McCarthy asking a doctor questions about autism treatment. I tried to forge through it but it was the style that turned me off. There was a lot of good information in the book but I was too hung up on it being a several hundred page interview.

I also had personal issues that tripped me up. The doctor talked about adopting a child with autism as though he was doing a great humanitarian thing (I felt like he deserved an award or something). As a mom of three kids with special needs who happen to be adopted, I was a little grossed out by his explanation. I wish I could explain why but words escape me lately.… (mere)

I was very skeptical going into this book. After reading it, I would recommend it for anyone who is parenting a child with developmental delays. I am totally inspired to look at how I care for my daughter in a different way. People that work with her comment frequently that her disabilities resemble autism. Because it is not one of her many, many formal diagnoses I've never looked into to. When you are already drowning, the last thing you need is more water. Well, this book is oxygen. My favorite quote: "There is no Ronald McDonald House for us, no wing at St. Jude's to offer help, or even hope." This book gives me hope. And right now, that is what I need.… (mere)
