The Democratic Art: Pictures for a 19th Century… af Peter C. Marzio
A bit slow-moving, but copiously illustrated and very informative about the processes, dissemination, and social meaning of chromolithography. It's required reading (along with Estelle Jussim's Visual Communication and the Graphic Arts) for any scholar interested in processes of artistic mechanical reproduction in the 19th century. It focuses specifically on the US as far as cultural context, but there is a lot of valuable general information as well. It's not the most exciting book to sit down and read, but it's an essential resource for anyone studying the mass reproduction of images in the 19th-century US.… (mere)
