I learned a lot about their human side. Smooth sailing - perhaps not unknown, but not a way to describe their lives. I learned even more that in becoming great, there are often problems that try a person. Calling them trials almost seems trivial since we use that word a lot. Still, it is a fearful journey that they went through and overcame.

This is a small paperback that is handy to use and easy to keep on hand. It features four essays on LOVE from the well respected book, FIVE CLASSICS BY TRUMAN G. MADSEN.

I decided not to finish this one. I found Roberts story fascinating. His early life was something out of a Dickens tale. His journey across the plains was filled with story after story of the mischief a mostly unsupervised child could get into. Once he was so tired, he snuck into a wagon and climbed into a barrel to get some sleep. Only invalids and the elderly were allowed to ride. But once he got into the barrel, he realized it contained molasses! He figured since he was already covered and sticky, he might as well stay put, and went to sleep anyway. Then he had a terrible time getting cleaned up afterwards.

But the writing was not my style at all and I had a hard time staying interested. I think I will skip this one for now.½

I was looking for insight into developing more love for my children - and I found lots of nuggets of wisdom on how to nurture love for others.

Contributors include, among others, highly respected LDS scholars and writers: Hugh Nibley, Terry Warner, Neal Maxwell, Truman Madsen, Chauncy Riddle, Robert Thomas, Leonard Arrington, Richard Anderson, and Monte Nyman. Madsen and Nyman were friends of my father. Chauncy Riddle was a BYU religion and philosophy professor who had a profound effect on my own thinking.

This is one of our favorite books about Joseph Smith. It portrays the majesty of his life, the power of his vision, and the depth of his caring about others. It also shows how he reacted to trials and adversity. We were reminded of this book and a BYU Idaho Education Week Program and were lucky to get the last copy on the shelves in the BYU-Idaho Bookstore, that summer of 2005.

This is a collection of essays or talks given in the 1970s. Some of them are excellent, and some are a little confusing. It felt like the author left out a lot of stuff, hoping the reader/listener would figure out the blanks. That may have been possible in the right context, but so much time has passed since this was published that it's nothing but frustrating now.
