I have read romance books for more years than I care to count. I remember receiving my first one. My cousin’s 80 year old great-grandmother gave me my first Harlequin Romance. I do not remember anything about the book including the title. I do remember going back each week for more books. This lady lived to be 105 years old. She read Harlequin romance books until about 1 year before she passed. This book by Meg Lacey would be a book I would share with her. I know she would love it.

If you are looking for a strong, quirky, accident prone female then check this book out. The plot and story are fresh. Lacey has a way to carry readers from the chair into the pages with each chapter. Readers are not just seeing everything happening, they are in the action.

I loved the cover, but I does not feel it fits the story. Looking forward to reading more by Lacey.

There were some really cute moments in this book. Almost every time Tess tried to create something on her own—especially if Josh was anywhere in the vicinity—disaster ensued. The natural distrust that Tess has for a reporter who’s snooping around in her life, combined with the fact that both she and said reporter are hiding major pieces of information from each other, makes for some amusingly snarky conversation. There was quite a bit to like here.

However, there were some issues as well. Practically from the first page, Josh was lusting after Tess—and it couldn’t have been anything more than superficial, given how little he knew about her at the time. Even once he met her—and knowing full well that he considered her to be a rival of sorts and was out to ruin her reputation—he immediately went into full-on get-her-at-all-costs mode. It just didn’t ring true. Tess’s attraction to him too seemed much too sudden. The ending felt rushed, almost as if parts were skipped in the interests of getting us to the HEA, pronto.

In a nutshell: a cute, quick read. Many amusing parts, but a strong case of insta-lust and a rushed ending do detract a bit. C rating.

Million Dollar Mistake has a strong foundation. Four mixed up lovers, snowbound together. It has all the makings of a taut, exciting ride to a satisfying conclusion. Raven and Nicholas want each other, but don’t. Jackson doesn’t know what he wants and Lorianne knows exactly what she wants. After the musical chairs of who is leading who on and who is trying to make whom jealous, they do get it sorted. But getting it sorted takes a very long and very exhausting route.

Therein lies the problem. Not one of them seemed to know the person they supposedly wanted or the person they loved. In the end, Raven and Nicholas may be together; but the sense that either knows the other any better or even loves the other seems to be missing, despite the grand gestures. What should have been a taut and rather suspenseful novel felt tedious as the musical chairs of “make so-and-so jealous” raged on, despite everyone including the reader knowing which couples would come out of the mix.

Raven, Lorianne, and Nana were the bright spots in it all. Nana was so well drawn that she was the most intriguing character. Lorianne, backbone of steel and soft-spoken, offered a glimpse of someone reaching toward her own HEA (and someone who deserves her own book). Raven, not drawn perfectly, but well enough to be a deeply sympathetic character, is someone I feel got shortchanged in all this. I’d really like to see this as the start of a series on Raven and Nicholas because I feel that their relationship has not yet reached its conclusion. But, I do want to see it get there and I know that it could.

Ultimately, Million Dollar Mistake is not perfect, but certain characters definitely pull you back and clamor for more time and a story of their own.
