Excelente novela, que no es utopía ni distopía, sino que vuelve a representar, en un lugar lejano, la relaidad del mundo del que, supuestamente, se había separado el protagonista.
El soñador principal, que invita al amigo a viajar a su país privado, no aparece más que por referncias; es posible que no esté allí, es posible que sea a su vez un personaje del sueño del protagonista; el sueño (nunca muy hermoso) se va derrumbando, según pasa el tiempo. Edificios, ilusiones, relaciones sociales, dinero, La supuesta nueva vida en otro lugar nunca se llega a cumplir, y acaba en desastre.
Los habitantes de Perle, la ciudad del sueño, se eligen por sus defectos, no por sus virtudes; carecen de ganas de futuro, y no se reproducen.
La sociedad de Perle no es nueva, sino que reproduce la europea u occidental. Hasta el dinero es de allá, una mescolanza de monedas y billetes de diferentes épocas, como pasa con la arquitectura, importada de épocas pasadas, y no creada de nuevo.
Ejemplo de altos ideales: el barbero, que abandona su trabajo para dejárselo a un simio entrenado, mientras que él se abisma en el estudio de la filosofía.
La economía carece de sentido, y puede uno cambiar de estado de riqueza a pobreza sin saber por qué.
El valor estético de las piezas artísticas es superado por el monetario.
La desintegración del sueño hace pensar que es que los sueños están conviertiéndose en pesadilla o sueño de angustia.

Hervorragender Roman, der weder Utopie noch Dystopie ist, sondern an einem fernen Ort die Realität der Welt nachstellt, von der sich der Protagonist angeblich getrennt hatte.
Der Hauptträumer, der den Freund einlädt, in sein Privatland zu reisen, erscheint nur als Hinweis; es ist möglich, dass es nicht da ist, es ist möglich, dass es wiederum eine Figur des Traums des Protagonisten ist; der Traum (nie sehr schön) bricht zusammen, während die Zeit vergeht. Gebäude, Illusionen, soziale Beziehungen, Geld, das vermeintliche neue Leben an einem anderen Ort wird nie wahr und endet im Desaster.
Die Bewohner von Perle, der Stadt der Träume, werden wegen ihrer Mängel ausgewählt, nicht wegen ihrer Tugenden; ihnen fehlt der Wunsch nach Zukunft und sie reproduzieren sich nicht.
Perles Gesellschaft ist nicht neu, sondern reproduziert die europäische oder westliche. Sogar das Geld ist von dort, ein Sammelsurium von Münzen und Scheinen aus verschiedenen Epochen, wie es in der Architektur üblich ist, aus vergangenen Epochen importiert und nicht neu geschaffen.
Beispiel für hohe Ideale: der Barbier, der seine Arbeit aufgibt, um sie einem dressierten Affen zu überlassen, während er sich in das Studium der Philosophie stürzt.
Wirtschaft ist bedeutungslos, und man kann von reich zu arm wechseln, ohne zu wissen warum.
Der ästhetische Wert der künstlerischen Stücke wird vom Geldwert übertroffen.
Die Auflösung des Traums deutet darauf hin, dass sich die Träume in einen Albtraum oder einen Angsttraum verwandeln.

Boy did that go downhill..... slowly.
An artist and his wife are invited to live in the secret Dreamland put together by a, lets call him an eccentric millionaire.
Whatever your idea of a Dreamland i can guarantee this won't be it :) . Its some pretty good weird fiction until the book starts announcing that the end is nigh... which was at the half-way point.
It just kept going and going. It also got more surreal and i prefer weird to surreal, its a fine line between the two.
The second half is more harrowing and graphic but i actually laughed at some of it as it just didn't have enough depth to be compelling or properly disturbing.
Some interesting imagery and ideas but far too long.

I believe the source of Patera's power is based on the idea of residual energy. The theory that objects or buildings which have been near extreme emotional events (such as murder) retain some of that emotional energy.
So Patera uses the energy in the buildings and objects to power himself and allow him to manipulate his victims into extreme emotional states.
