Review by Rollie Welch (VOYA, August 2002 (Vol. 25, No. 3)):
This is a multi-book review of two volumes in the "Basketball Hall of Famers" series. Bill Bradley's biography emphasizes the importance of combining education with sports. First enrolled at Princeton University, Bradley ultimately became a Rhodes Scholar. His NBA career with the New York Knicks centered on team play that led to two championships. Entering politics, Bradley served as a senator and ran against Al Gore for the Democratic nomination in the 2000 presidential election. The playing career of Abdul-Jabbar, arguably the NBA's greatest player, is dominated by superlative stats. His interest in jazz and his conversion to Islam are both emphasized. A stint coaching a high school team on an Apache reservation along with his appearances in movies will interest teens. Both titles reveal the athletes as unique people rather than just basketball players. Awkward as youths, through hard work and determination, they achieved success, a message designed to encourage young players. Unfortunately information is worded in a very juvenile manner that will alienate teens. Controversial events are glossed over or ignored. Errors pop up--free throw distance is fifteen feet, not eighteen--but biographical information is accurate. This series will not grab ESPN junkies, considering most teens have minor interest in athletes who retired before the teen's date of birth. Although these books provide a good starting point for reports, teens are unlikely to select them voluntarily. Older readers might be led to further reading of both players' autobiographies. Glossary. Index. Photos. Biblio. VOYA CODES: 2Q 2P M (Better editing or work by the author might have warranted a 3Q; For the YA with a special interest in the subject; Middle School, defined as grades 6 to 8). 2002, Rosen, 112p. Ages 11 to 14.… (mere)
