Anne Kennedy has done something I didn't know could be done- she has changed a devotional book genre. While most devotionals are aimed at women with comfortable Christian lives, full of cheap cliche's and cheaper answers, this book is written by the wife of an Anglican priest and can be read with insight by angry and sarcastic women. And men.
The Bible quotes are unexpected and appropriate. The advice and discussion are apt and helpful for people who are angry, sarcastic and socially depressed. While this set of devotions still return to the Bible and to God, the path described is unexpected and unusual. This allows the person who is angry to experience a different pattern of thought, and to break the original patterns that led to the maintenance anger and grudges. As one other reviewer wrote, "It brings fresh water from an ancient well."
Dealing with death, overwhelming responsibilities, betrayal, outrage and frustrations, this set of devotions are also not arranged by date. They are numbered so if you miss one or ten, it doesn't matter. The Bible is addressed so that angry and retaliatory impulses can be identified and perhaps resolved. The Bible is not all sweetness and light. There are bad times mentioned in the Bible to bad people and to bad things. Living a Christian life is running into things that cannot be controlled and that are overwhelming in frustration. This is a book of active Christianity that deals with real problems people have, and perhaps can lead to a calmer and less sarcastic life.
A piece of advice a good friend gave me when I was becoming too cynical: "The only way to stop being cynical is to stop being screwed." This is the kind of advice we get from this book. Good, self-evident, but unexpected. A good book, and I rate it highly for Christian men and women. I also rate it highly for non-Christians and even atheists, because it shows the practical side of approaching life as a Christian, much different from those so often promoted with a simplistic and saccharine theology.
