Lovely illustrations make this book a nice read. It is the story of Jonny Appleseed. Of course, I've heard the name, and knew he spread apple seeds, but that's all I knew.

This book takes the read through Johnny who was an intuitive young boy always wanting to work in the earth. A strong fathy and a love of the bible kept him alert and intelligent. Taking a train throughout the country he did not know gave him the idea that fallow land should not be wasted.

As he grew he came to learn more and more about planting seasons, and types of apples. Where ever he went, he gave apple seeds with directions for planting and growing, and a small hand-made image of apples in all their glory as they hung on the trees, and the ground. Children played with the apples, and all too soon the word spread about the incredible man, Johnny Appleseed

With some stretches of early life, Johnny Appleseed stands strong as a kind, loving,
and non-violent man.

Readers of all ages will learn why and how to grow apples
and the importance of saving every seed for the future.

This book is a story-driven biography of Marie Curie the co-discoverer of radium, first female to receive a doctoral degree in physics and win a Nobel Prize. This book understates the prejudice she faced as a woman in her time.

This book tells the story of Apache chief Cochise and settler Tom Jeffries, who together helped to create peace between the Apache and the white settlers. They became as close as brothers. This book is part of the Value Tales series and therefore has a definite agenda, pushing the value of honesty and how that creates trust. It's a good book for upper elementary. It may be a bit dated in its illustrations, as it's from the late '70s, but the story is still worth reading, and it includes a short biography of Cochise at the end.

This title is obviously hilarious (it's from a series of "ValueTales," which are not as far as I can tell intended to instil Christian values but only "good' ones, but the fact that I wondered I think tells us something interesting about Christian ownership of the term "values" in our society). And as a kid who took out the Rocket Richard hockey bio from my elementary school library (wish I could remember what it was called) about umpty-billion times, I can confirm that the his exploits and history can be riveting to kids if told right. Unfortunately, this book replaces most of those facts with repetitive, goofy sloganeering "You did it, Maurice ... because you had ... TENACITY." "You're right! I showed them all, because of my amazing surplus of ... TENACITY!" One presumes all the other players didn't have enough tenacity or they also would have scored 50 goals in 50 games, or that Clarence Campbell didn't show tenacity when he banned the Rocket for the season and stuck to it through all the vegetables and teargas and crypto-nationalist rioting. Also, Maurice has a talking hockey stick buddy called "Slapper" who's just begging to be revealed as a kind of demonic thrall doing the filthy, insinuating work of a Lord of the Pit who feeds and gains strength off each of Rocket Richard's goals and assists.

Summary: The Story of Sacagawea is one of my favorites. Sacagawea is a young Shoshoni woman who has been asked to be a guide for explorers, Lewis and Clark. Because she was so familiar with the land, they asked her where there was new land to be discovered. She joined their expedition to discover new territories.
Personal Reaction: Of course every little Indian girl wanted to be Sacagawea growing. She was filled with such adventure and curiosity. I am not a fan of history but this is one of my favorite expeditions that I learned about in school.
Classroom Extension Ideas: 1.) Have the students draw out their own map for the expedition
2.) I would have the students make a list of provisions and describe what their adventure would be like.

Florence always cared for people and animals. She went to comfort people in war. Food, water, and blankets were all provided by Florence. Florence is known for her compassion. Read all about her in this book. It is good.½

Marie wants to become a scientist badly. Many people say that there cannot be a girl scientist. After Marie gets a good grade, she is free to do anything. She becomes a scientist! This book tells a lot about Marie and her sister. I recommend this book to kids who like learning about people in the past.½

Thisbook offers great things, but it is very long. It would be great to take bits and pieces from to do a character education unit on leadership.

This book is about Abraham Lincoln. The beginning of the story Abe Lincoln was grown and had a son. Abe was very well liked and respected amongst all. His son wanted to be just like him. Later in the book it tells the story of Abe's childhood and how he became the President of the United States. Though it was rough for Abe, especially with the death of his mother at a young age. It was just Abraham, his sister Sarah and his father. They built their own cabin to live in and fetched their own water to drink.

I think this book is interesting. It shows how children lived in those days compared to now. Many children even adults take everyday for granted and abuse their rights without thinking how one suffered in the old days.

In a classroom, we could do a research project on Abraham Lincoln by assigning the children to create a timeline of his life from birth to death. Also, we could create a song about Abraham's life.

This biography begins "Once upon a time" and introduces Lincoln's friend the squirrel. Tells story of Lincoln's life leading up to the presidency. Caricature/cartoon style illustrations. Apparently Lincoln becomes very tired in 1860, that is when large shadows appear below his eyes. Full page essay of historical facts at end of story.
