Charles Heavysege (1816–1876)

People are so Hard on Heavysege. It's true that Saul is a highly flawed work, but I really loved this book. The Characters are so crisp and true, and quite ingenious inventions in some cases. I think Malzah, the evil spirit sent from the Lord, is probably one of the most interesting Characters in CanLit. I agree with the introduction - the first section is suitably brisk, the second somewhat padded, and the third is dead weight. I am glad I read it, but read at your own risk.
