A nice story. It's not the most sophisticated but it's cute. Meryt is a nice character. It's interesting to read about her taking on such adult problems like marriage and children because that was how the culture was. The light magical aspect was also nice and all-in-all it was nice to read something historical based not set in Europe.

The plot was very boring and kind of dragged on. My expectations for a historical fiction were too high for this book and compared to other Egyptian historical fictions, it is majorly inferior. I choses this book because it was historical fiction.

In Ancient Egypt, Meryt-Re is a 13 year old orphan taken in by her father’s sister but soon to be married off if her uncle has his way. She loves her cousins but the one closest in age to her is forever teasing her. When he falls ill after his manhood ceremony, her uncle blames her “evil eye” and banishes her from the house. She can’t stay with her best friend as there is unrest at the tomb construction site that her friend’s father is overseer of, so she ends up staying with the local “witch” who teaches her many things and allows Meryt to discover the truth about what is going on in her village. p.151 –153 Baki is sick and Meryt goes to see if he is any better… (mere)
