Written by a former signalman with the 32nd Army Tank Brigade, part of the Tobruk garrison, the book is divided into three parts: the siege, the breakout, and an epilogue which is mostly an evaluation of Rommel's generalship. Because of the author's background, it is difficult to be sure when he is speaking from personal experience, when he s citing information gleaned from books, and when he is citing primary sources. There are some useful maps, mostly drawn by the author, although nowhere near enough. Numerous references to 8-digit map references are lost on the reader, since the original maps are not shown. In addition, British military abbreviations are frequently used, sometimes without explanation. But although of uneven quality, the book is still worth a read.½
