Great historical fiction...wonderful characters. I would have given it five stars except for the very ending of the book, which hit me out of the blue.

Entertaining read full of political shenanigans and a mad old prince with an impossible request. Loved all the firemaster bits.

Sofia was a hard character to like, although you had to admire her gumption, and I could take or leave the official 'romance' (although I'd be interested in knowing more about Richard Seaborn and a certain Count - send any fan fiction my way asap).

This is the first book I've read by this author. If definitely pick up more.

Historical fiction set in the world of King James I of England. His daughter is the protagonist, and a large portion of the plot revolves around James's rocky relationship with his family, and his attempts to select a suitable marriage for his daughter, who is strong-willed, independent, and horrified by most of her suitors. The plot moves well and can hold interest. It is not a romance, but more a study of family and political dynamics in 17th century England. An additional bonus is the author details in an appendix exactly which characters she made up and which are real, and also gives a brief run down of what is known about the court. She has tried to keep the situations, and the fictional charaters, true to the nature of the time.… (mere)
