Arfy the dog writes persuasive letters to families he knows to try to find the right home for a homeless kitten. Hijinks result, but all ends well.

First sentence: My name is Arfy. Woof! I am a dog. And dogs love to smell. I smell lunch. I smell my bed. I smell my sweet person. I am so good at smelling! But today I smell a new smell. A stinky smell!

Premise/plot: Arfy smells a stinky smell. Can Arfy find out WHAT stinks so bad?

My thoughts: This was a cute, funny early reader. It says it's a comic reader, but, really from what I can tell it just means that the dog's thoughts are in bubbles. I think this one would appeal to young readers who enjoy dogs, pets, and humor. It isn't too big a mystery to guess who is stinky!

I'm not sure what Scott thought of this one....but I enjoyed this one. Because I loved the different ways it conveyed letter writing and communication. Including virtual messaging! I also like showing children the different locations in a school!

Gotta to love Arfy ;)

Oh my goodness, I think I might like this book even more than "Can I Be Your Dog?" It has many of the same similarities (especially using the letter writing back and forth--it's why I use it when teaching ECRTR.) However, finding a home for Scamper is the main part of the tale.

In the end, which I won't spoil, Scamper finds the perfect place--just like Arfy did. =) I think adults and children alike will smile at this book.

This book about Arfy the dog is adorable!! It won the Colorado Libraries for Early Literacy category for "write" this year. For young children, learning that the written word and the spoken word are one and the same is evident in this book. Reading the letters that are exchanged is how this is done. Writing letters back and forth to your child is one way you can do this activity at home. And if the writings are scribbled, who cares? I guarantee you they will tell you what they wrote!

So we see Arfy write prospective owners about wanting a home. Each illustrated page and note match each other's vibe. Even adults that I read this book to loved "Can I Be Your Dog?" I would enjoy asking children throughout the book who might adopt Arfy. I realized that if you pay attention to the illustrations, it is slightly obvious. But notice, I didn't do that. ;)

I really enjoyed this story. It is a very cute story about a dog who wants to be adopted. He writes letters to others asking if they would like to adopt him, therefore it makes a good book for students who are learning how to write letters.½

Golden Sower nominee. Really liked it--good book for teaching empathy, but also for teaching design. Love the color palette and layout of every page. Super cute.

I love this book! As a school librarian, this is definitely one of my favorite read alouds ever. It's a joy to read to with lots of opportunities for engagement as Arfy writes letter after letter to the folks on Butternut St. "Will they take Arfy as their dog?" Shouts of no or yes. As students begin to see the pattern, you can ask why not? So many details to love. When Arfy is at his lowest point, it's raining and he's in a soggy box. Great discussion about setting and word choice to set a mood. Spoiler: Then one of the best page turns is when Arfy comes running to greet the mail carrier. You just want that dog to jump right off the page. I watch kids air hug him every time. When the story ends, I love going back and showing them how they missed Mitzy Whipple in every page. It's a rare kid who has noticed her.
A truly heartwarming story that has a positive message about rescuing pets at the end. A must read for everyone!

Arfy is one lucky dog. He has a family who loves him and he has a great life. One day as he is walking along sniffing the ground and he smells something different. He finds a cute little kitten. It was a new friend. Arfy is determined to find a home for this little cutie. He writes letters to a music teacher. He tells the teacher all of his new friend, Scampers redeeming qualities. He goes through the story imploring babies, and a mechanic as well as a snazzy hotel to give Scamper a home. The only problem is that none of these are a good fit for Scamper. He tells Arfy thank you in a letter and not to worry. The try one last place and at last Scamper has found a furever home. I would recommend this for any collection and for dog and cat lovers alike. The illustrations are sweet and reminiscent of days gone by and the old cartoons. The illustrations are colorful and will keep the readers attention until the end to find out what happens to Scamper.

In this adorable book, the dog is looking for a home. He is writing letters to several people to try to sell himself as a wonderful dog for each family. Find out if this dog is able to find a family? Sometimes answers to your wishes come from unlikely places!

This story is about Arfy, a stray dog. Afry would love to find a home so he starts writing letters to people in the neighborhood to try and find a family. After one stormy night, Arfy finds a letter addressed to him. It instructs him to meet at the mailbox to meet his new potential owner. It turns out to be the mail carrier and finally Arfy has a place to call home. A heartwarming story of a dog finding a family and a family adopting a dog.

A cute retread of the first book in the series as Arfy, the letter-writing dog, applies his skills toward the adoption of a stray cat he finds in his neighborhood.

This is a very cute book about persistance and dogs. I read this to my pre-k student I nanny and I would let him read the word "dog" every time it came up and was very helpful for his letter recognition. It could also be used for first or second grades writing lessons as there is a new character who talks differently on every page.

Arfy is a homeless dog who lives in a box in the alley. Arfy decides to write to every person on Butternut Street about what a great pet he'd make. His letters to prospective owners share that he's house broken! He has his own squeaky bone! He can learn to live with cats! Told through Arfy's letters, this is an engaging story and has fun examples of both expository and persuasive letter-writing.
