I received a free copy for an honest review. Marie is a young girl who desperately wants to leave her dire circumstances and live a life of luxury with jewels and clothing. As she navigates living in a royal palace, her objective is to become the king's favorite mistress. Her plans are taking form until she meets Tris. Their relationship is rocky, deceptive, and full of twists and turns. Based on the fact that this story was written "around the time of Louis XIV", the circumstances surrounding how Marie became a mistress are very realistic as are her ambitions to use any methods possible to secure her future. My absolutely favorite chapter was the epilogue and the revelation of who killed the Comte.… (mere)
