A novel of evocation: of place and voice. The three narrative voices are a boy, his older cousin some 25 years later, and his older self soon after that. Each voice is self-consistent and credible but the fragmenting middle-aged philologist took longest for me to assimilate. The childhood memories of an antebellum estate near Brunswick MD contrast with the Tuscan landscape of the later sections but this is more about inner journeys that it is of geographical travel.
