Found abandoned as a tiny kitten at Christmastime, Holly the cat is taken in by a human family who name her in honor of the season, and welcome her into their home. Timid at first, Holly soon grows comfortable, growing up and becoming a mother cat herself, as well as a most beloved member of the family...

I discovered Holly: The True Story of a Cat while searching for Christmas stories about cats, and recognizing English author/illustrator Ruth Brown's name, immediately requested it from my library. As it happens, the Christmas connection is fairly slight, confined to the fact that Holly is discovered during the holidays, and limited to one or two scenes with a seasonal setting. That being said, I was not disappointed with the book, enjoying the heartwarming story of a homeless cat finding a home and family, and finding the artwork, done in acrylics, watercolors and charcoal pencils, beautifully expressive. Recommended to young cat lovers, and to picture book readers who enjoy (as I do) stories about animals finding a home.

In this pop-up book a group of animals discover that there tree is scheduled to be cut down. They work together to problem solve and save their home. The would be a good book for a kindergarten classroom to teach about problem solving and working as a team.

A sweet little children’s book about direction and perspective, to help little ones understand things like “up, down, through, into, over,” etc.

Bonus points because it features a snail (my spirit animal guide and one of my favorite creatures).

I also love the snail’s little derpy eyes

Little Sister is a cry baby and can't do anything for herself. Or at least that's what her older siblings think. It is not until they are all walking home that they realize Little Sister is capable of more than they thought. This book is cute and would be good to read to siblings. Other than that I think it's a kind of forgettable book.

In this book, a child plants sunflower seeds. As the seeds try to grow, they are picked off one by one by birds, stomping feet and other animals. In the end, only one big sunflower is left. It shrivels and dies, dropping its own seeds to start the cycle again.
I like that this is both a counting and science book. It's a good book to pair with a plant growing activity. I also like how realistic it is about nature left to its own devices: many animals and plants don't make it to adulthood.
Overall a good book to read to little ones to expose them to life cycles.

I admit to buying this book purely because of the little white spaniel. A picture book with only a sentence at most on each page, the painted images are dark, somewhat spooky and gloomy, and unusual for most picture books. It's a story about an atmospheric night for a little dog, with a little twist in the morning.½

This book was creative in counting numbers. It starts off with 10 seeds and ends up as 1 flower, which produces 10 more seeds. I liked how this book counting backwards instead of forward.
The illustrations were a little scary and too realistic. That rat picture Ugh!

A little girl takes you on an adventure in her "Mad Summer Night's Dream". She follows an eerie sound down some nightmarish steps out into a sunny field where she discovers paisley colored birds, fighting cats, and monkey referees. The story is very alive and imaginative. The illustrations are so detailed, the pictures tell more than the words. This book had me hooked from the beginning and I read it to the very end. This is a great book for children and it will allow them to explore their imagination.

The big sneeze by Ruth Brown
Children's story of a farmer taking a nap in the barn one hot summer day.
Farmer sneezes that the fly lands on a spider, that captured the fly and the list goes on.
Farmer's wife asks what is going on, LOL
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

I didn't really understand what this book was trying to show except maybe how numbers relate to each other, but even with that the sizes of things didn't relate. I really enjoyed how it was illustrated, though I don't see myself using this particular book.

Every cat owner that has multiple cats has "that cat". We've had the cat that follows everyone and every thing around and does every thing that you or your other animals do. I found this book to be really heartwarming.

Ten Seeds is an interactive counting book that doubles as a way to teach children about the life cycle of a flower. The book begins with ten seeds, then counts them down as different environmental factors eventually leave only one remaining flower. These environmental factors range from small animals stealing seeds to a baseball accidentally landing on a small plant. Each of these factors is counted as well, allowing for an additional lesson in subtraction. Between the educational aspects and the colorful illustrations, I would consider this to be an a great book to use as a means of practicing counting with children.

This spooky book was a great share around Halloween. My students were captivated by the white ghost dog and didn't realize until the very end that he was visiting the earth from the crypt. With this spooky story, my students moved into writing their very own spooky stories.

What a great and entertaining book to help show students what all happens to seeds that eventually become flowers! I would absolutely love to read this to my students and possibly include a science lesson with having the students getting to plant their own seeds to see what happens and if it goes along with the book. Great informational book as well as fun ways to include an activity that goes along with it.

This is a great book to read to a child who is learning about numbers. It's a very brief book that helps children with numbers and it also gives a chance to talk about the different things that are mentioned. (Ex. buds, greenflies, shoots)
