Took me a few chapters to get into, but once I did I found a remarkable family history spanning the end of Stalin to Putin. It’s a book that describes the vastness and scope of the USSR the paranoia, the cynicism, the complexity of a truly fucked up, unfree, memory-holed people. Whew. There is something special about a cookbook that also tells the story behind the foods and the culture. Please to the Table does this so well, the author brings you with her on her journey, see the places and "taste" the dishes through her words.

This book is 50% Russian/Soviet history, 49% personal family history and 1% food. Not the ratio I signed up for.
