New Make by Jennifer Bramseth
Bourbonland Short Stories & Novellas #8

This was so much fun! I was definitely NOT expecting the main couple to be who they were. In some ways this was two romances in one since Coraleigh and Clay were together half of the pages. I was able to catch up with them though they still have some issues to deal with before they can reach a final HEA. The second romance was one that has two older people who find one another rather serendipitously and I was thrilled for both of them. I won’t tell you who they are but it was a treat to read how they met and fell in love. And now I am looking forward to finding out who will get together next. I really want to find out if Candace and Ting will find a way back to the happy relationship they had earlier in the series, am curious to see who will run for and win Governor and...well...this series still has a few more twists and turns to take care of before all will be tied up neatly in a bow. And guess what? I can’t WAIT to read whatever happens next!

Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.

A Devilish Choice by Jennifer Bramseth
Devil Springs Cozy Mystery #5

Greer Galloway is still Clerk at the Court House in Devil Springs, happily dating boyfriend Brock and hoping to be engaged in the near future. She is happy to be where she is though wouldn’t mind one day being the judge in the courthouse she now is clerk in. The story would not exist without a murder so...murder there is. There are some overlaps that are not apparent at first but that is remedied before the end of the book. I truly enjoy returning to this series because it is a thinking reader’s cozy mystery with a bit to learn (by me) with each book that comes along.

What I liked:
* The “real-ness” of the book
* Greer’s unflinching ability to face...whatever happens
* The people that Greer works with
* Brock’s tenacity...whatever happens
* The vying for judge-ships and what it entails
* A look at “bad” lawyers and how they sometimes get their comeuppances
* The way the story is told and how it all works out in the end

What I did not like:
* What I was meant not to like – the baddies were truly bad though they may not have thought they were
* Taking a look at what some people do in the name of revenge, love, thwarted love, whatever...some people definitely don’t think like I do

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I like to read more in this series/by this author? Without a doubt!

I've been feeling a bit off lately, so although I have several new releases burning a hole in my Kobo, I opted to read something else I got free/cheap. Secret Blend, Bourbon Springs #1 by Jennifer Bramseth.

This was another mediocre read. Nothing horrible, but nothing really to suck me in. The plot pretty much depended on some manufactured drama to move things along. The characters were pretty flat and the sex scenes weren't very inspired. The writing was fine, nothing too odd or poorly done. The whole thing was just... bland.

I've given a number of books that were better than this a 3 star rating, so this one gets a 2. Also posted on my blog: http://editrix.ca/2018/10/review-9-secret-blend/

A Devilish Character by Jennifer Bramseth
Devil Springs Cozy Mysteries #4

Every wished you had said no to a person you could not refuse? Greer Galloway must have been feeling just that sentiment as she undertook the task she felt she could not say no to. As she prepared for the hearing regarding the future of Buford Blankenship she was also under pressure to prepare for a conference and an unexpected audit of the office she is in charge of. She has a lot to do as she tries to get all of her ducks in a row. She is also a bit worried that the time it will take might put a bit of a crimp in the relationship she has with Brock. When a few people turn up dead she is once again found sleuthing and putting her life on the line. At the end of the book t here is a hint of what might lie in her future and I am eager to find out just what will happen next in this woman’s life. NOTE: This is not your typical cozy mystery...Greer is an intelligent woman that just seems to fall into situations that see her finding out who the murderer is while she works hard using her law degree as a matter of living her life and doing her job.
