A gloriously bad 70s action sci-fi movie with philosophical themes.

The film is set in a dystopian post-apocalyptic future where mankind is divided into two groups: the Brutals, who struggle to survive in a Hobbesian world of violence and oppression, and the Eternals, an elite group in possession of all of mankind's past knowledge, who have achieved immortality but are sinking into boredom and apathy. One man, a Brutal named Zed, sets out to find the truth about the Eternals and challenge the status quo.

The movie is ultimately a meditation on the importance of death as a defining element of the human condition. However, any serious examination of this topic is severely undercut by the atrociously bad dialogue, cheesy low-budget effects, gratuitous sex and nudity, and overall weirdness of the film's atmosphere. Taken as a "serious" film, Zardoz is a muddled, pretentious, self-indulgent mess. Yet despite its flaws, the imaginative setting and imagery, interesting story, and overall campy charm make this a memorable and, for me at least, highly enjoyable movie.

In conclusion, if you want satisfying sci-fi action or deep philosophical insight, look elsewhere, because this movie fails to deliver on either front. On the other hand, if you want to sit back, relax, and watch Sean Connery prancing around in red underpants while a floating head intones "The gun is good! The penis is evil!" — you might want to check this one out.

In pieno conflitto mondiale due militari dispersi - un pilota statunitense e un ufficiale giapponese - approdano, senza saper l'uno dell'altro, su uno sperduto atollo del Pacifico. Quando si scoprono, danno inizio a una specie di guerra personale, combattuta dapprima a colpi di bastone e poi volta, dall'americano, quasi in scherzo. Per bisogno, infatti ma anche per indispettirlo, questi ruba al suo avversario il cibo e gli beve l'acqua faticosamente raccolta. Furibondo il giapponese riesce a catturarlo e a legarlo a un rudimentale patibolo; poi le sorti si rovesciano e lo stesso "supplizio" tocca a lui. Finalmente, costretti dal perdurante isolamento a coesistere e a collaborare, i due costruiscono una zattera, con la quale affrontano fame, sete e tempeste, finché non approdano a una nuova isola. Qui, tra le macerie di un ex-deposito giapponese, poi occupato dagli americani, trovano cibo, sigarette, qualche indumento ed alcuni vecchi giornali. In uno di questi, il giapponese scorge le atroci immagini dei suoi commilitoni caduti in battaglia. Di colpo, lo spirito della guerra riprenderà il sopravvento. Il regista John Boorman racconta gli anni della sua infanzia. Che erano anni terribili per gli adulti (quelli della guerra) ma non per i ragazzini, che scoprivano il mondo (e per i quali un bombardamento era più che altro occasione per non andare a scuola). Intanto gli adulti morivano, si disperavano per i loro cari in guerra o in prigionia, soffrivano per amore. (fonte: Mymovies)

Il film narra la storia di Re Artù, figlio di Uther Pendragon e Igraine, sposa del Duca di Cornovaglia Gorlois. Artù viene concepito con l'inganno, giacché la moglie del duca viene sedotta e fecondata da un Uther che ha assunto le sembianze di Gorlois, colpito dalla bellezza della donna. L'inganno è reso possibile grazie alla magia del mago Merlino e al potere della spada Excalibur, che è stata consegnata al mago da una Dama che vive in fondo ad un lago. Per ottenere l'aiuto del mago Uther promette a Merlino che gli avrebbe affidato il figlio nato dalla notte di passione con Igraine, ma, vinto dalle preghiere della donna, quando il mago si presenta a ricordare al re la sua promessa lo insegue per convincerlo a restituirgli il bambino. Caduto in un'imboscata dei fedeli di Gorlois, prima di morire Uther conficca la spada Excalibur in un masso profetizzando che solo un re potrà estrarla. Il neonato Artù viene consegnato da Merlino a Sir Hector, un nobile "minore" il quale lo alleva come un proprio figlio. Artù diviene lo scudiero del fratello maggiore acquisito, Kay, ma è totalmente ignaro della sua vera identità.

Le terre sono da tempo senza un Re, il caos regna e il popolo necessita di una nuova e valorosa guida. Colui che sarà in grado di estrarre la spada Excalibur dalla roccia in cui è collocata potrà essere Re, ma nessun cavaliere era stato finora in grado di farlo. Quasi per caso il giovane Artù riesce ad estrarre Excalibur dalla sua collocazione, essendo lui stesso figlio di Uther; la comparsa di Merlino sulla scena sarà chiarificatrice per lui.

Tuttavia per molti nobili Artù non può essere un re: egli non è neppure un cavaliere ed è troppo giovane ed inesperto; ma alcuni nobili sono disposti a sostenere il nuovo sovrano, quindi si arriva alla guerra. Artù, educato da Merlino, si dimostra subito estremamente valoroso e capace: accorso in aiuto del vassallo Leodegrance che aveva preso le sue parti, riesce a sconfiggere in battaglia i suoi nemici. Artù diviene amatissimo dal suo popolo, restaura finalmente un governo stabile ed unisce il paese. Si innamora della bella Ginevra, figlia di Leodegrance. Al suo fianco si schiera anche l'impavido Lancillotto, un cavaliere eccelso, mai battuto in duello da nessun avversario, tranne che da Re Artù in persona (ma con l'aiuto di Excalibur), che diventerà il più amato e fidato cavaliere del re. Proprio a lui, infatti, Artù affida il compito di portare nella sua nuova reggia, a Camelot, la sua futura regina; ma sarà a causa di questo incontro che Lancillotto e Ginevra si innamoreranno di un amore proibito.

In ogni caso, il regno sembra ormai saldo e tranquillo, ma invece alcuni nemici bramosi di potere stanno tramando nell'oscurità; la sorellastra di Artù, Morgana (anch'ella figlia di Igraine) sta diventando una maga potente, avversaria di Merlino e quindi anche di Artù. Per sua istigazione, Galvano oltraggia la regina, ma verrà sconfitto in duello da Lancillotto. Nel frattempo, però, ella riesce a convincere Merlino a rivelargli i propri segreti e, soprattutto, "la magia del fare" (Anaal nathrakh, urth vas bethud, dokhjel djenve) con la quale imprigiona il mago in una colonna di ghiaccio. Nel frattempo Ginevra e Lancillotto cederanno all'amore, ormai troppo forte, e Artù, una volta scoperto l'inganno, per ira abbandona Excalibur tra i due amanti, coricati nella foresta, infiggendola come fece suo padre nella terra; la stabilità del regno è infranta. Morgana con l'inganno riesce a concepire un figlio dal fratellastro, che in quanto figlio del Re è erede al trono di Camelot; inoltre, riesce a corrompere diversi cavalieri della tavola rotonda prima fedeli ad Artù.

Iniziano carestie, la gente è ridotta in povertà e fame; Camelot è in decadenza. Artù è ormai quasi infermo, senza più la guida di Merlino e l'amore di Ginevra, che pentita si chiude in un convento. Anche Lancillotto vaga senza meta, disperato per aver tradito il suo Re. Ormai la speranza sembra aver abbandonato ogni cosa, Morgana e il suo crudele figlio, Mordred, sembrano aver vinto, ma una luce resta ancora accesa: un cavaliere di nome Parsifal (che precedentemente era stato lo scudiero di Lancillotto) riesce a trovare il Santo Graal, grazie al quale ridona energia e vita al morente Artù, e quindi alla sua terra, che con lui è un tutt'uno. Il Re ricostruisce l'esercito, recupera Excalibur dalla moglie Ginevra, la quale aveva conservato la spada nel convento, e si uniscono a lui anche Lancillotto, il padre adottivo e il fratello adottivo Kay; quindi marcia verso le truppe di Mordred per la battaglia finale di Camlann. Inoltre l'affetto di Artù riesce a liberare lo spirito di Merlino. Il mago fa visita a Morgana in sogno e la inganna a sua volta, annullando la magia con cui la donna aveva bloccato il suo invecchiamento (e sarà proprio Mordred, orripilato dalla vista della madre invecchiata, a ucciderla) ed invocando una fitta nebbia che ostacolerà le altrimenti troppo numerose truppe di Mordred. Alla fine della cruenta battaglia, ferito mortalmente da Mordred, che uccide a sua volta, Artù viene trasportato nell'isola immortale di Avalon, mentre Parsifal, su suo ordine, rigetta Excalibur nel lago ove viene ripresa dalla Dama: risorgerà solo quando "un giorno verrà un altro re".

Quando Uther Pendragon seduce la moglie del Duca di Cornovaglia, Artù viene concepito. Diciott'anni più tardi il giovane Artù si trova davanti Excalibur, la spada magica, conficcata nella roccia da Uther morente, e riesce a sfilarla. Acclamato re, intraprende l'impresa di unificare il paese, consigliato sempre dal saggio Merlino. Di vittoria in vittoria, Artù forma la compagnia della Tavola Rotonda, in cui il cavaliere ideale è Lancillotto del Lago.

When I found out that John Boorman once published a novelization of his movie Zardoz (a film I cannot but class as "feel-good" and downright precious in its bungling of Deep Themes and Substance), I simply had to read it. I kind of wish I hadn't now: its clumsy pretention and not-quite-sensical pseudo-philosophy just aren't as entertaining without the visuals. It's really only of marginal interest for fans of the movie.

The novel version of the 1974 film Zardoz, written by the same person who wrote and directed the film itself.

Zardoz has, I think, something of a reputation as an inexplicable bit of baffling weirdness. But when I watched the movie, decades after it was made, the main feeling I had about it was a sense of familiarity. I read a lot of 1970s science fiction in my youth, and a lot of it felt exactly like this: pseudo-profound and slightly surreal and entirely too obsessed with sex. The whole thing made me feel oddly nostalgic.

So when I saw the book version at a library sale a while back, I thought it might be fun to revisit it in this form. Maybe I'd feel some sense of nostalgia for my nostalgia.

But, eh. It's not an awful example of the kind of thing it is, but it's not great, either. Also, the kind of thing it is hasn't aged very well, and my nostalgia does have some limits. Even though it's only about 130 pages long, I was getting tired of it by the end. The simple truth is, it's just not nearly as entertaining when you can't see Sean Connery running around in that, erm, highly memorable costume.½

Like Arthur C. Clarke's 2001: A Space Odyssey, John Boorman's book Zardoz has a complex, complementary relationship with the film of the same name. Although composed after the film, it also incorporated features from earlier drafts by the filmmaker/author and is far from a mere "novelization." In his preface, Boorman characterizes the book as "an interpretation of the film" as well as something of an exorcism to address the spirits which possessed him to write, produce, and direct the movie in the first place.

There is no real difference in plot, character, or theme between the movie and the book. The book omits the film's prologue from Arthur Frayn, replacing it with a glimpse of the initial activation of the Tabernacle. And it affords a little more detail regarding the protagonist Zed's history, experiences, and intentions. In both media the story is set in 2293 on an Earth that has long suffered a complete division between a cloistered superhuman elite of Immortals dwelling in hidden Vortexes on the one hand, and a post-apocalyptic remnant of Brutal humanity inhabiting poisoned Outlands on the other. Zardoz is the story of a Brutal's invasion of a Vortex.

In terms drawn from ancient Gnosticism, we can consider the Immortal Arthur Frayn (a.k.a. Zardoz) to be a Demiurge, a duplicitous "architect" god-magician who creates among the Brutals a race of Exterminators culminating in its messiah Zed. ("Zed" is the English for omega, the last letter of the Greek alphabet. See Rev. 22:13.) Zardoz deliberately disillusions Zed with an exposure of his own falsity, driving Zed to seek the Unknown God in the Vortex, where the Immortals are in the role of Gnostic archons. They are emanations of the Pleroma, the ultimate divinity in the Tabernacle. By the end of the story, though, these valuations have been reversed: the Vortex is in fact a prison-world with the Tabernacle as its Demiurge. The Immortals have been condemned to degrade eventually into inert Apathetics or self-hating Renegades, without ever being allowed to die. Zed is their deliverer, and the bearer of a spark that can regenerate this corrupt race of deluded pseudo-gods.

Zed at one point cites and quotes Nietzsche: "He who fights too long against dragons, becomes himself a dragon" (110). And this bit of philosophical name-dropping has more than a little relationship to the larger themes of the story. Nietzsche notoriously remarks, "God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him. How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers? ... Is not the greatness of this deed too great for us? Must we ourselves not become gods simply to appear worthy of it?" (The Gay Science §125) The death of God is enacted in various ways throughout Zardoz: Zed's religious disillusionment, the murder of Arthur Frayn, the destruction of the Tabernacle, the slaying of the Immortals, and the fall of the Zardoz head. Zed is himself a Nietzschean overman: "a mutant. A second, maybe third generation. Therefore genetically stable ... mentally and physically vastly superior ..." (60-1). He must overcome his role as a Brutal, and the Immortals must go under for life to be renewed.

The Übermensch Zed was produced through the experimental artistry of Arthur/Zardoz. The murderous cruelty of the Exterminators is central to the program to create a "slave who could free his masters" (124). But within the Vortex, although they first view the Brutal Zed as a mere animal, there are no slaves or masters. The Immortals are the "last men" whom Nietzsche's Zarathustra anticipates with horror: "No shepherd, and one herd!" Their constant, technologically-mediated plebiscites enforce an emotional uniformity. "People still fall out, but are soon reconciled—otherwise it spoileth their stomachs" (Thus Spake Zarathustra, prologue §5). For all of their vaunted longevity (not really immortality in the end), the Vortex inhabitants do not value or promote "life" in the Nietzschean sense, and it is left to the Exterminator Zed to declare, "This place is against life" (93).

Vortex society seems more congenial to homoerotic relationships (May and Consuella, Friend and Arthur) than to heteroerotic ones. Procreation has been abandoned long ago. When confronted with the fact that "Eternals ... discovered that erection was impossible [for them] to achieve," overman Zed is aghast at their estrangement from "their true selves" (56).

Both book and movie refer to other Vortexes -- the one invaded by Zed is Vortex Four. Some of these Vortexes are on paths of interstellar colonization, which was supposed to have been an original motive for developing the technology of the Tabernacle. But the other Vortexes are disregarded in the end, presumed to be equally ill-fated. The social and psychological mechanisms of the system provoke pathologies of compliance (the Apathetics) and resistance (the Renegades), which eventually deplete the productive population to the point of failure. Vortex Four does not merely fail, though; it is sacrificed. Ultimately, Zardoz is Jesus (second time as farce) as Arthur Frayn embraces his own execution, and that of most of his peers, in order to promote a new form of life: their resurrection in the line of Zed.

Postscript: Only much later it comes to me that the term Vortex is the Fourierist Tourbillon! Boorman's troubled utopia is a technologically catalyzed phalanx, instituting Harmony within its bubble, while letting the larger world descend from Civilization to Savagery. This attempted isolation is what dooms it, "for they have sealed up the Pylon with blood, lest the Angel of Death should enter therein. Thus do they shut themselves off from the company of the saints. Thus do they keep themselves from compassion and from understanding" (Liber CDXVIII, 12th Aethyr). The laws of attraction demand that association communicates itself to the universe. Isolated, it mutates into a decrepitude that must deconstruct itself through the instrument of Zed: "This place is against life" (93).

Four friends canoe into the wilderness of the deep south.

Completely engrossing but too unpleasant to be enjoyable.

This is a book based on a movie, I think. If the book came first, I've never seen it. The movie starred Sean Connery & was good, but it's dated. I give it 4 stars because it came up with some original stuff for the time, including quantum computing & cloning.

Watched the film over 20 years ago, but wasn't particularly impressed. Then circumstances lead me to picking up a reading copy whilst on holiday in Cornwall a few years back; and so, on a damp dreary August day I started reading... Suddenly everything was revealed and something just clicked! I was spellbound and unable to put it down! I still can't believe how much I enjoyed this book.
As soon as I got back I wasted no time in tracking down the DVD. The film was much, much better than I remembered it (although I wish they hadn’t added that silly intro at the start!).
The story is crying out for someone to remake a big budget special effects version of the film sometime in the future - and rake in the fortunes of such an original storyline! Hope I get to see a new version someday. Like Logan's Run a film in need of a remake!

A interesting read from a very independent-minded director.½

Having enjoyed the film, I found this film tie-in book interesting and worthwhile. Published screenplays vary greatly in readability, however good the film, so it's good to see time and thought has been spend putting this book together.
In addition to the screenplay for his 1987 film Hope and Glory, John Boorman has written a short memoir about his own memories of growing up in London during World War II. There are also plenty of stills from the film.

Ummmm, it's bad. But then you get to see Sean run about in this itty bitty leather outfit, so it does draw your attention now and then.

Fascinating and entertaining autobiography by one of the most interesting film directors.½
