The bees have gone and Australia is in the midst of an ecological disaster as a result of colony collapse disorder. Peony has high hopes of becoming a 'bee' and having the wonderful task of pollinating the fruit trees. This story is a beautifully told tale of how the joy, courage and hope in one young girl can inspire belief in others. I was utterly charmed.

Such an amazing story!

My 11yo son received an advanced copy from a local bookshop to write a review. I started reading it aloud to him at lunch time today. We had short breaks for soccer training and dinner, but I managed to get it finished before bed time. I don't think he would have slept without hearing the ending! But now my poor voice needs a rest!

Set in Australia, this is a wonderful tale of bravery, perseverance and loyalty. It champions the bonds that make people family, and that even in bad times there are good people in this world.… (mere)

I read this in a weird order, hearing most of the middle while doing some work in the school library while lessons were on, then having to borrow the book to read the end and beginning. Peony is a fierce character, and the author does not hold back from real to life battles and challenges for her, which explains her personal growth within the tale.

This is a great book for kids. It is not a great book for me, because there is a significant plot point that is Not Good.

There is some fascinating world building going on here, with the ways that dealing with pollination happens in a world (country?) without bees (with my science hat on, I'm all like 'honey bees are not the only pollinators', but I get that this isn't the place for that nuance).

The viewpoint character is completely believably not quite ten; some of the situations they get in to are a tad terrifying as a parent, but will probably come across as exciting to a middle grade reader.

content notes (spoilers)
- domestic violence
- parental death
- kidnapping by a family member
