Nicolas Barker OBE FBA has had a long and very distinguished career in the world of books. In publishing, he worked for Rupert Hart-Davis, Macmillan and OUP, and then for twenty years was Deputy Keeper at the British Library, responsible for Conservation

The Butterfly Books: An Enquiry into the Nature of… af Nicolas Barker
One of those books I wish I hadn't waited so long to read. A fascinating account of Prokosch's forged poetry pamphlets, with excellent and thorough descriptions.
A short essay on the 1854 Two Poems which Barker suggests may have provided the inspiration for the Wiseian forgeries.
Once I'd read the original cover-to-cover, finally, I had to turn right to the sequel. This updates the Enquiry very usefully, and provides much background on Forman, full transcriptions of the Forman-Wise correspondence, and much additional useful material.
Includes Barker's essay: 'The rape of the Rylands' from The book collector about the sale by the John Rylands University Library of Manchester of 98 supposedly duplicate rare books in April 1988.
