A fast paced, quick to read thriller about an ex MI5 agent who has been living undercover for the past 20 or so years

After a tragic accident involving his step son, his current marriage is pretty much over, and after he is contacted by an associate decides to assist in the humanitarian effort in Bosnia. On the way there he catches sight of an old flame, also invokes in the relief process. As he goes to Bosnia, he is contacted by MI5 to see if he can find evidence on a mass murderer.

A fairly complex plot ensues with Iranian scientists trying to obtain nuclear material, a collusion of western security services, and the IRA trying to locate Alex to avenge a murder.

Quite enjoyed it, and is better that some of his others that I have read.

A nice read, bit of mystery, mixed with some political intrigue - medium pace. A few cuts above airport fiction, enough action to keep you awake on a boring night.

Geoffrey Archer
Not to be confused with Jeffrey Archer.

Geoffrey Archer is a fiction writer from London, England. He specialises in military adventures and spy thrillers and created the character Sam Packer. His writing has some similarity to that of Stephen Coonts, Graham Hurley and Phillip Kerr.

After several false starts in his choice of career, Geoffrey Archer moved into journalism, ending up with ITN in 1969. He covered the troubles in Northern Ireland in the 1970s and the civil war in Beirut in 1976, was allowed to travel with a Polaris nuclear submarine, and eventually became Defence Correspondent for ITN. These experiences prompted him to begin writing stories with military and spy themes.

In 1995 he left ITN to concentrate on writing full time. In 1998 his novel Fire Hawk was short-listed for the Crime Writers' Gold Dagger Award
