Very unusual (in my experience) -- Caesar's Gallic War from the Gaulish side. There are a lot of novels dealing with it from the Roman side, including 2 others by Anderson. The hero of this is a loyal supporter of Vercingetorix's revolt, though he is pictured as telling the story in old age after becoming reconciled to the Rmnan conquest. I read all these books about 50 years ago (age about 12) and liked them enough to buy them again now. I still like them.

Part of Anderson's Roman series, which includes one other book (Pugnax the Gladiator) dealing with Catiline's conspiracy --Pugnax and the hero of this book, Tiberius Rufus, are originally gladiators together until Catiline purchases Tiberius to be the captain of his bodyguard. He and Pugnax are originally in Catiline's conspiracy but go over to Cicero's side. The books are basically pro--Cicero but show some sympathy for Catiline as a charismatic and in some ways honorable man, better than most of his fellow-conspirators. Anderson also did 3 books based on Julius Caesar's campaigns in Gaul and Britain. I liked all the books when young, but especially the two gladiator books. I remembered enough of them to hunt them down and buy them about 50 years after I first read them. I still enjoy them.… (mere)

One of a series of Roman historical novels I ooved as a child. Three are set during Caesar's Gallic War (Swords in the NOrth, For Freedom and For Gaul, With the Eagles) and two at the time of Catline's conspiracy (Slave of Cataline and Pugnax the Gladiator). Pugnax is a young Gaul originally named Dumnorix who is captured and sold as a slave in Rome where he becomes a gladiator.

One of a series of novels set at the time of Julius Caesar. This is about a Roman soldier serving with Caesar in Gaul who escapes the treacherous massacre led by the Gaulish chief Ambiorix.
