Kort biografi: Along with the likes of Art Downs, Bill Barlee, David Hancock and Garnet Basque, Frank W. Anderson pioneered the viability of unintimidating, populist history titles about frontier life in British Columbia although he himself was never primarily a British Columbian.

Born in Brandon, Manitoba in 1919, Frank W. Anderson has one of the most remarkable life stories of any Western Canadian historian. Orphaned at 18 months, he grew up in foster homes, reform schools and jails. At age 16, he was convicted of killing a prison guard and was sentenced to death. This was commuted to life and he spent the next 15 years in a penitentiary. There he completed his high school education and became the first prisoner in Canada to take University courses behind bars.

Brisk retelling of the RCMP manhunt for a lone trapper in the NWT and Yukon wilderness. Johnson, whose identity remains unclear, led a posse of Mounties, natives and trappers a merry dance through blizzard and tundra in the middle of winter, lasting six weeks, killing one, and wounding two of his pursuers who had the advantage of radio and a plane.

Bonus chapters at the end reprint an article on the Mad Trapper’s potential identity, an account by the pilot (and WWI flying ace) W.F. May, and a recapitulation of the story and of May’s career. Book is full of instructive photos, including two unsettling images of the dead trapper’s sneering, emaciated visage, radiant with defiance and malice.… (mere)

The Frank slide story. -- af Frank W. Anderson

A concise and well written account of the rock slide at Crow's Neck Pass in Alberta, Canada that buried many houses permanently entombing their residents. It includes a triumphal tale of how the miners in the mountain escaped from under the slide.

I bought this book after watching the film Death Hunt with Charles Bronson. It is based loosely on this book.

Albert Johnson (the name he gave to local trading stores) is an illusive figure, turning up on the rat river in Canada. A trapper by trade, the local mounties were asked to contact him after some local indians had their taps tampered with.

However, when the mounties turned up at his cabin a firefight ensued which saw Johnson tracked across hundreds of miles of frozen landscape by man, dog and aeroplane.

A well written book with the story being told from more than one point of view, also has a number of diagrams and pictures to help the reader.… (mere)
