Kort biografi: The Latin poet Catullus was born at Verona, Italy, around 84 BCE. He moved to Rome as soon as he could, and pursued a career as a lyric poet. He and his friends were the avant-garde of the period both in their lifestyles and their literary productions. Catullus's wit, family wealth, and talent gave him entree to the high society of his time. He spent one year as an assistant to the governor of the province of Bithynia in modern Turkey. Catullus died young, in 54 BCE, probably at Rome. Itʻs doubtful that the picture shown on the upper left of this page even purports to be a picture of Catullus. Men didnʻt wear beards in his time, and the picture is in any case of a much older man; Catullus died at about 30.

Le poesie af Gaius Valerius Catullus

Leggendo i carmi di Catullo di ha l'impressione che la Bellezza – quella con la B maiuscola, appunto – esista. E che Catullo abbia saputo metterla nero su bianco in tutto il suo fulgore. E vi consiglio la lettura dell'edizione Einaudi, dove i carmi sono ben tradotti e il commento è utile per la comprensione dei componimenti.

La mia donna dice che non vuol stare con nessun altro,
neanche se la chiedesse Giove in persona.
Così dice, ma quello che dice una donna all'amante appassionato,
va scritto sul vento e sull'acqua che fugge.
(Carme 70)

In quattro versi, Catullo ci descrive quello che autori meno geniali di lui hanno impiegato pagine e pagine per descrivere e speso grandi parole. Nei primi due versi abbiamo l'aspirazione dell'infinito: l'amore che Lesbia – la donna amata – professa è così grande, così forte e così assoluto che nemmeno Giove – il re degli dei – potrebbe persuaderla a tradire l'amato.

Ma poi abbiamo gli altri due versi – la paura, il pessimismo e il realismo del poeta. L'amore, sebbene sia l'unico modo in cui i mortali possano assaggiare l'infinito, può finire. Le promesse, anche quelle più accorate, possono essere infrante. E Catullo ci trasmette questo timore con un'immagine efficace e immediata.

Certo, Catullo amava anche l'invettiva. E non andava tanto per il sottile...

Che cosa fa, caro Gellio, uno che tresca
con la madre e la sorella, e ci passa le notti nudo?
Uno che non lascia che lo zio faccia il marito,
sai che delitto si prende sulla coscienza?
Quello che non può lavare neppure Teti ai confini del mondo,

Catullo potrebbe essere uno qualunque di noi. Uno che ama la sua donna e uno che infama i suoi rivali in amore. Uno che credeva nell'amicizia e uno che disprezzava che non teneva fede ai patti. Uno che soffre terribilmente per amore.
