Wellesley Booksmith: Artist Gareth Hinds to read, draw(!), discuss graphic novel King Lear (november 6 kl. 18:00)
Growing up in small-town Vermont, Gareth Hinds was a "nerdy kid who drew all the time." Now he's an accomplished graphic novelist described by comics expert Scott McCloud as "a talent to be reckoned with." His adaptations of classic works of literature have been praised by critics and honored with selections ... (mere)to the lists of New York Public Library Books for the Teen Age and American Library Association Great Graphic Novels for Teens. Of his Beowulf, The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books says, "With treatments like this available, honors English may never be the same," and Kirkus calls his graphic novel of The Merchant of Venice "the standard that all [Shakespeare adaptations] will strive to meet." Gareth explains the motivation for his work this way: "I try to make the classics more accessible to anyone who might be a little intimidated by either the language or the length of the originals, which includes both kids and adults." Both kids and adults, then, will enjoy Gareth's highly visual presentation about the process by which he creates a graphic novel. At this event he'll talk about his recent adaptations of two of Shakespeare's plays, King Lear and The Merchant of Venice, AND give us a sneak peek at his forthcoming graphic novel of The Odyssey, to be published by Candlewick Press in the Fall of 2010. He'll also sign books and accept your words of congratulations on becoming the newest addition to the extended Booksmith family! (He married our store's Children's Book Buyer, Alison Morris, on September 12th of this year.)

Cornerstone Books: Frank Schaeffer (november 6 kl. 19:00)
Frank Schaeffer læser fra Patience with God.
Frank Schaeffer has a problem with fundamentalist Christians. But he also has a problem with the New Atheists. And despite the obvious differences in their ideology, it’s the same problem: mindsets that leave no room for questions, and even less for tolerance. He’d even argue that atheism has become ... (mere)a religion in itself. In Patience with God: Faith for People Who Don’t Like Religion (or Atheism) (DeCapo Press, October 2009, ISBN 9780306818547, $25), Schaeffer offers a middle ground for those who find right-wing evangelists as distasteful as the uber-liberal lefties who mock them. As Schaeffer explains, there are a whole bunch of people out there—Republican and Democrat—who are disgusted with the polarizing forces that exist in our nation, and who believe (or at least try to believe) in God. Frank Schaeffer is the author of the New York Times bestseller Keeping Faith and, most recently, the memoir Crazy for God. He has appeared on NPR, CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News. Barbara Berg læser fra Sexism in America.
In Sexism in America: Alive, Well and Ruining Our Future (Lawrence Hill Books, September 2009, ISBN 9781556527760, $24.95), renowned feminist author Barbara J. Berg debunks the many myths about how far women have come and the pervasive belief that ours is a postfeminist society. Combining authoritative ... (mere)research and compelling storytelling, Berg traces the assault on women’s status from the 1950s—when Newsweek declared “for the American girl, books and babies don’t mix”—to the present, exploring the deception about women’s progress and contextualizing our current situation. All women are hurt by a society lauding their attributes in speeches while scorning them in public policy and popular culture, and the legacy of the women’s movement is being short-circuited in every aspect of their lives. Passionate, extensively documented, humorous, and persuasive, Sexism in America is simultaneously enlightening, frightening, and revitalizing. Berg, an ardent optimist, helps women understand where they are and why and how they can move beyond the marginalizing strategies. It is exactly the right book at exactly the right time.

This landmark volume is the first comprehensive overview of poetry written over the past sixty years. Presented in a beautiful Spanish-English en face edition, The Whole Island makes available the astonishing achievement of a wide range of Cuban poets, including such well-known figures as Nicolás Guillén, José Lezama Lima, and Nancy Morejón, but also poets widely read in Spanish who remain almost unknown to the English-speaking world - among them Fina García Marruz, José Kozer, Raúl Hernández Novás, and Ángel Escobar-and poets born since the Revolution, like Rogelio Saunders, Omar Pérez, Alessandra Molina, and Javier Marimón. The translations, almost all of them new, convey the intensity and beauty of the accompanying Spanish originals. With their work deeply rooted in Cuban culture, many of these poets - both on and off the island - have been at the center of the political and social changes of this tempestuous period. The poems offered here constitute an essential source for understanding the literature and culture of Cuba, its diaspora, and the Caribbean at large, and provide an unparalleled perspective on what it means to be Cuban.

Wellesley Booksmith: Boston Herald Sports Columnist Steve Buckley to read from and discuss Wicked Good Year (november 18 kl. 19:00)
Steve Buckley.
Sports fans delight! Join award-winning Boston Herald sports columnist Steve Buckley at Wellesley Booksmith for an insightful, celebratory look at Boston’s mega-successful 2007-2008 sports season, during which the Red Sox swept the World Series, the Patriots went undefeated during the regular season, ... (mere)and the Celtics won the NBA Championship.

Boston sports fans will enjoy hearing the presentation and participating in the discussion based on Steve's new book, Wicked Good Year: How the Red Sox, Patriots, and Celtics Turned the Hub of the Universe into the Capital of Sports. ABOUT THE BOOK Steve's new book, Wicked Good Year, tells the story of the 7 months and 20 days during which the Red Sox -- proving that 2004 was no fluke -- won yet another World Series, the Patriots became the NFL’s first undefeated team in a regular season since the 1972 Miami Dolphins, and the new-look Celtics won Boston’s first NBA Championship in almost 20 years.

More than just a recitation of dates and games and stats, Wicked Good Year looks at the three teams through the eyes of the players, coaches, and team personnel and also a variety of personalities and fans, from a 38-year-old obsessed Red Sox fan with a collection of more than 5,000 autographs to pop singer/actor Donnie Wahlberg, who followed the Celtics with as much passion during the lean years as when they were playing the Lakers in the NBA Finals. Buckley’s tribute is a must-read not only for the Boston faithful looking to relive this magical time but also for the legions of sports fans wondering how exactly these three teams worked together to shed their city’s “Loserville” image. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Steve Buckley is the original sports media mogul in Boston. Also known as the “Old Time Baseball Dude”, both because of his proclivity for bringing up stories and stats from the olden days of baseball and also because of his involvement with the Oldtime Baseball Game, Steve Buckley has been a columnist with the Boston Herald since 1995, and has a long resume of sports writing experience, including a stint at the National Sports Daily. He’s also written for the Portland Press Herald, Boston Magazine and Yankee Magazine. Before it came into vogue, Buckley was making appearances on all different forms of media, writing for newspapers, hosting a TV show (on NECN) and making radio appearances on WEEI.

Jeff VanderMeer diskuterer Booklife: Strategies & Survival Tips for the 21st-Century Writer.
Booklife: The Private and the Public in Transmedia Storytelling and Self-Promotion - Fictional experiments in emerging media like Twitter and Facebook are influencing traditional printed novels and stories in interesting ways, but another intriguing new narrative is also emerging: the rise of “artifacts” ... (mere)that, although they support a writer’s career, have their own intrinsic creative value. What are the benefits and dangers of a confusion between the private creativity and the public career elements of a writer’s life caused by new media and a proliferation of “open channels”? What protective measures must a writer take to preserve his or her “self” in this environment? In addition to the guerilla tactics implicit in storytelling through social media and other unconventional platforms, in what ways is a writer’s life now itself a story irrespective of intentional fictive storytelling? Examining these issues leads naturally to a discussion on the tension and cross-pollination between the private and public lives of writers in our transmedia age, including the strategies and tactics that best serve those who want to survive and flourish in this new environment. What are we losing in the emerging new paradigm, and what do we stand to gain?
