It's not uncommon to find collections that are essentially the same story retold in different contexts. Here, instead, each story takes on a different angle, or level... The title story that finishes the collection is absolutely my favorite, but I suspect without the groundwork laid by the rest it wouldn't have the impact it does. ( ) I started this book by reading, "We Are Calling to Offer You a Fabulous Life," and fell in love with the lyrical prose. The rest of the short stories are equally enchanting. With exotic locales, interesting characters, and a variety of themes, WHAT THE WORLD WILL LOOK LIKE WHEN ALL THE WATER LEAVES US, is a startling short story collection worth savoring. Absorbing stories. All involve a woman at a crossroads, and many--peripherally--a mythical monster: Sasquatch, Loch Ness, the Congo's mokele-mbembe, mishegenabeg (a legendary aquatic creature of the Great Lakes). Bear in mind, these are not science fiction or horror stories. The characters dwell in our world, and the monsters remain mythical. Yet there are real-world people who have encounters with such monsters because, in one way or another, people exist to whom these monsters play a role. I can imagine the author sitting down and making a list of such monsters, then thinking, "How might each one of them play a role in a real-person's life? Ground rule: nothing supernatural happens." And as our protagonists negotiate the murk of their lives, there are other elements: submarines, dark jungles, mysterious phone calls . . . All very well done. I'd look forward to reading more of Ms. van den Berg's work. ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse

Selected for the 2009 Barnes & Noble's Discover Great New Writers program, finalist for the ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year Award in 2009, longlisted for the 2009 Story Prize, and shortlisted for the 2010 Frank O'Connor Award The stories in Laura van den Berg's rich and inventive debut illuminate the intersection of the mythic and the mundane: a failed actress takes a job as a Bigfoot impersonator; a botanist seeking a rare flower crosses paths with a group of men hunting the Loch Ness monster; a disillusioned missionary in Africa grapples with grief and a growing obsession with a creature rumored to live in the forests of the Congo; and in the title story, a young woman traveling with her scientist mother in Madagascar confronts her burgeoning sexuality and her dream of becoming a long-distance swimmer. Rendered with precision and longing, the women who narrate these starkly beautiful stories are consumed with searching--for absolution, for solace, for the flash of extraordinary in the ordinary that will forever alter their lives.
