Who'd have guessed that running employee background checks at the HI-Data Corporation would make DD McGil the target of a ruthless killer? For DD, a thirty-something English professor turned investigator, the routine job should have been a welcome distraction from her fiancé's death and her eccentric Aunt Elizabeth's quest to authenticate an unlikely literary treasure--a Robert Burns text worth millions if proven genuine. Relying on her own moxie (bolstered by the occasional shot of Glenlivet), her sexy lover, and the fact-finding acumen of her antiquarian bookseller friend, DD races to find out who's behind the high-tech treachery at HI-Data before it's too late.     … (mere)

Excellent first book in a series. Not sure why the title but that's okay. DD McGill is an insurance investigator. Her Scottish "Auntie" brings her some artifacts that may be from Robert Burns -- yes, the Scottish poet and known Jacobite.

While DD is working on that problem she is also involved in an investigation for work that involves potential industrial spying, along with a murder or three.

Plenty to like here, DD is a wonderful character with flaws and quirks, her family is very funny and her hurt about the death of her fiance by suicide (or was it), all give her a depth of emotions that make her interesting.

There are more in the series and I'll be getting to the, eventually ( )
