For any theatre enthusiast surely the greatest pleasure in performing arts fandom is taking in a production for the first time. Whether it is a story you have seen presented before, or something brand new that you have only just heard about, there is nothing like attending a live performance. Louis Kronenberger's The Best Plays of 1921-22 endeavours to capture the excitement of a theatre season that passed nearly one hundred years ago. It must be said that the utility of this book is greatly altered by the time period in which one is reading it. For those who came upon this collection in 1922 or 1923, there would be have been tremendous value in the reviews that are provided. The author has attempted to select the "best" plays, which is to say plays highlighted in this collection were both heralded for their artistic merit as well as being popular enough to garner fans. Readers could then have made an educated decision on which plays were worth seeing in the coming year. For the contemporary reader, the true value of The Best Plays of 1921-22 is the historical snapshot the book provides. The introductory pages highlight the record breaking theatrical season of 1921, and the author takes a month-by-month approach in describing the major releases. Certain trends are noted and predictions are made for coming years, some of which proved rather prescient. The book highlights ten specific plays, including a summary of the plot and selections of the dialogue. "A Bill of Divorcement" and "The Circle" are amongst the ten plays detailed, both of which went on to become significant theatrical presentations. The Best Plays of 1921-22 is an interesting read for any theatre enthusiast, particularly for one with knowledge of the plays discussed or one seeking to expand their historical compass.
