Fiction. Suspense. Thriller. HTML:

Gretchen Lowell, the world's most beautiful serial killer, has escaped from prison in Chelsea Cain's next unpredictable, edge-of-your-seat thriller, Sweetheart.
With Heartsick, Chelsea Cain took the crime world by storm, introducing two of the most compelling characters in decades: serial killer Gretchen Lowell and her obsessed pursuer Portland Detective Archie Sheridan. The book spent four weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and garnered rave reviews around the world. But the riveting story of Archie and Gretchen was left unfinished, and now Chelsea Cain picks up the tale again.
When the body of a young woman is discovered in Portland's Forest Park, Archie is reminded of the last time they found a body there, more than a decade ago: it turned out to be the Beauty Killer's first victim, and Archie's first case. This body can't be one of Gretchen'sâ??she's in prisonâ??but after help from reporter Susan Ward uncovers the dead woman's identity, it turns into another big case. Trouble is, Archie can't focus on the new investigation because the Beauty Killer case has exploded: Gretchen Lowell has escaped from prison.
Archie hadn't seen her in two months; he'd moved back in with his family and sworn off visiting her. Though it should feel like progress, he actually feels worse. The news of her escape spreads like wildfire, but secretly, he's relieved. He knows he's the only one who can catch her, and in fact, he has a plan to get out from under her thumb once and for all.
Chelsea Cain has topped her own bestselling debut thriller with this unpredictable, edge-of-your-seat story

Such an evil, evil woman! And I love the slowly developing relationship between Archie and the reporter. The next few books have been requested from my library. ( )

I had a lot of hope for this series after the first book, but Sweetheart was ultimately a disappointment. It felt like all the build up from the previous book was squandered. To start with, immature mess of a journalist Susan Ward is back, with her haphazardly presented and articulated 'daddy issues' and ability to screw up at every opportunity. Her story fit better in the narrative this time around but her perspective chapters are just utter drags. Her immaturity is perhaps meant to be a counterpoint to the deeply damaged psyche of Archie Sheridan, but I just found it annoying.

After the introduction to the incredibly f*cked up relationship between police officer Archie Sheridan and incarcerated serial killer Gretchen Lowell in the previous book, I wanted more. I didn't get it. Archie's perspective never deepened, despite his physical and mental deterioration, his narrative felt shallow.

Ultimately it was a limp but quick thriller, nothing special or unique about it. 5.3/10 ( )

Wow for this second book! This book picked up where the first one left off. There was a little more action, more intrigue, and suspense!

Archie Sheridan is still trying to come to grips in his relationship with Gretchen Lowell a/k/a the serial killer as he tries to repair his relationship with his wife at the same time. Things go awry when Gretchen escapes prison and Archie is back out there trying to recapture her.

In the meantime, there is Senator Castle who is wrapped up in something that could cost him his career. Susan (the reporter) is trying to work on a murder case of Molly Palmer and Susan thinks the Senator is somehow involved. This is where the intrigue really kicks in as so much is happening all at the same time.

There is a lot of puzzles to solve and mysteries to find as the book kicks up a notch all the way to the end. There was a loop thrown near the end of the book that I didn't see coming which kept me glued to my kindle to get the book finished!

Chelsea Cain is an amazing author as she just wraps all the mysteries and suspense so tight into one book that I am giving this book five stars! ( )

i find this book slightly less enjoyable than the series' debut, but only because the male protagonist made me SO. ANGRY. however, the murder(s) presented in this novel were much less predictable, and the inter-character relationships became mch more creepy. oh, ARCHIE. ( )
