Outlander af Diana Gabaldon (1991)

  1. 204
Into the Wilderness af Sara Donati (pollywannabook)
pollywannabook: The closest thing to Outlander out there. Diana Gabaldon even lent out the character of Claire for a cameo in this book
  2. 111
The Winter Sea af Susanna Kearsley (Iudita)
  3. 40
Huset ved stranden af Daphne Du Maurier (aynar)
aynar: Much better example of time travel.
  4. 73
    Timeline af Michael Crichton (leahsimone)
  5. 40
The River of No Return af Bee Ridgway (redheadedali)
  6. 30
Wildfire at Midnight af Mary Stewart (LiddyGally)
LiddyGally: I recommend this book because the writing styles are in a similar vein rather than the stories being the same. Both, however, are set in the wilds of Scotland.
  7. 118
Heksenat af Deborah Harkness (Anonym bruger, SunnySD)
  8. 41
The Bronze Horseman af Paullina Simons (littlebear514)
littlebear514: Although the stories are COMPLETELY different; the writing is of the same quality and the stories are both deeply involved.
  9. 20
    Overseas af Beatriz Williams (becksdakex)
    becksdakex: Romance and time travel.
  10. 10
The Rose Garden af Susanna Kearsley (jennyj271)
  11. 10
Son of the Morning af Linda Howard (amyblue)
  12. 10
The Legend of Lady MacLaoch af Becky Banks (elbakerone)
elbakerone: Though Banks' novel is set in present day (and is considerably shorter), the love story with the gorgeous backdrop of Scotland was reminiscent of Gabaldon's series.
  13. 10
Mørkets Dronning af Susan Carroll (infiniteletters)
  14. 10
Mary Queen of Scotland & The Isles: A Novel af Margaret George (MissBrangwen)
  15. 00
Daughter of Time af Sarah Woodbury (Kaylinofhr)
Kaylinofhr: The After Cilmeri Series reminds me a lot of the Outlander series.
  16. 00
A Wee Guide to the Jacobites af Charles Sinclair (MissBrangwen)
  17. 00
Waverley af Sir Walter Scott (Cecrow)
Cecrow: Classic novel set at the same time and place.
  18. 00
A Wild and Heavenly Place af Robin Oliveira (nicole_a_davis)
  19. 11
The Firebird af Susanna Kearsley (LAKobow)
LAKobow: Also involves elements of realism mixed with fantasy, Scotland, romance, and historical fiction.
  20. 11
The Song of Albion Collection: The Paradise War, The Silver Hand, and The Endless Knot af Stephen Lawhead (charlie68)
charlie68: A story about a trip farther into Britain's past.

I had no intention of reading this book. It’s 900 pages. Amazon classifies this book as the #1 seller in the “time travel romance” category. WTF!? I didn’t even know there was such a category. I don’t read romance novels at all, let alone “time travel romance” novels. I didn’t think there were many books I’d be *less* interested in. And yet, somehow after hearing all the chatter about this book, curiosity got the better of me and I thought I’d give it a chance. I loved it.

I listened to the audio version of the book, read by the inimitable Davina Porter. It’s taken be the better part of the summer to get through the book (I probably could have read it faster), but Porter does an amazing job bringing the characters to life.

The quality of the writing surprised me, as did the attention to historical detail. (Okay, okay, I’ll admit, it. Gabaldon *does* do a great job with the romance between characters Jamie and Claire, too. I now see what the fuss is all about.) I’m very much looking forward to continuing the series. 4.5 kilted stars.

DNF at 50%. Mental note, follow my friend Alvaro's advice: if at 10% you are not enjoying a book, just give it up.
I have a million reasons in my head not to recommend this book but it would be unfair. I would rather put the effort in writing about a book that I have enjoyed that focusing on negative things. It's just not for me. ( )

I will say first that this book is not really what I expected, nor what I normally read. It tilted much more heavily towards romance than the historical fiction/fantasy that I tend to read. However, I found it a nice change of pace, and plan to continue reading the series. It's perfect for the Swiss train rides on which I really picked it up after only briefly starting it a month ago.

Gabaldon has an ability to write a slow paced story without making it seem dull or boring. Entire chapters devoted to life in a castle or the chapter at Lalybroch that could easily be boring ended up instead being quite interesting, and the overarching plot leaves you always wondering what will happen next. Recommended to those who are looking for a long series to jump in to, and who like to read tales, wherever they lead. ( )

This is the first time I read this series. I was a little confused at first but once I was into this book I could not put it down. The passion between Claire and Jaimie was captured so well by Diana. I started to feel like I was part of the story. I think by far this is the best love story I have ever read. Their passion for each other and the loyalty and respect they share for one another is something that is rare in today's society. I don't want to say too much with out giving the story away, but this book is full of passion, love, betrayal, lust, loyalty, family, gore, torchure and much more. Some partys made me cry while others made me smile. There were parts in this book that down right made me sick to my stomach.. But that is what makes a great book. If you can feel all of these emotions the brook is awesome and worthy for praise. I would recommend this read to anyone who either has or has not seen the series on starz. I am off to "Dragonflies in Amber" I hope it's as good as this one. ( )

People disappear all the time. Ask any policeman. Better yet, ask a journalist. Disappearances are bread-and-butter to journalists.
Young girls run away from home. Young children stray from their parents and are never seen again. Housewives reach the end of their tether and take the grocery money and a taxi to the station. International financiers change their names and vanish into the smoke of imported cigars.
Many of the lost will be found, eventually, dead or alive. Disappearances, after all, have explanations.
Usually.
