The problem with this book is not that it's too gory or disturbing, though that may be the case for some. The problem is that it's just not written very well. The plot is thin and the characters are not well developed. I hate to say this, but someone could have made a decent book out of this concept. The portions that deal with Joe's ideas about his urges being linked to some kind of a virus are almost interesting, they just aren't well fleshed out. Either the author didn't do enough research on the subject of psychology and folklore or he wasn't skilled enough to bring the information into the book. There isn't any reason to feel sympathy for any of the characters either - even the victims. Then there's the gore. The book is extremely brutal and grotesque, describing acts of cannibalism in pretty great detail and yet there is a clinicalness to it in some cases that seems odd. For example, the word "regurgitate" is used repeatedly which just seems strange when you're reading about someone having their genitals eaten. It may seem like nitpicking but there is a distinct oddness about this book in the way it is written. It's as if the author was going for something he just couldn't quite pull off.
Overall, it's okay. At the beginning I thought I might not even finish it but it did get better around the middle. ( )
