this academic account tries hard to be clear, and tries to confine itself to military, rather than social history. It is a good example of that sort of writing, and quite readable. ( )

Very entertaining read on the US Army from the Civil War to 1890. The story of the Indian Wars. Even handed account but it is about the common soldier. ( )
