A typical Goddard novel and I have read over a dozen of them now, enjoying them all. It is typical in that an ordinary guy gets caught up on a complex web of deceit and crime just by offering to help his ex wife out of a fix. Everything starts innocently enough, as they usually do in Goddard's novels. A fading, small time actor is on his way to Brighton to perform in a play at a local theatre. His ex wife lives there and she asks him to find out why a man is seemingly stalking her. Everything takes off from there with the usual Goddard twists and turns. Eminently engaging and impossible to put down. ( )

More or less typical Goddard novel. A bit more domestic and quotidian in its motive forces, which is actually a good thing. ( )

There are certain books that have to devote page after page to the bad guy explaining his actions in forensic detail, often in some kind of bizarre suspension of hostilities before the police roll up, so the protagonist gets to ask all kinds of "but why didn't you....." and "how did you...." questions to tie up all the plot holes the reader thinks he's spotted. This is one of them. That kind of thing always convinces me there's a gaping logic loop somewhere in the plot if only you take the time to investigate it under laboratory conditions.
In the novel, actor Toby Flood goes on the trail of a strange guy who appears to be stalking his estranged wife. It subsequently appears that he is the one being pursued, rather than her, and by some very unsavoury characters. Much of the action relies on Toby's interest in getting back together with his wife, and given that she didn't come across as a particularly nice character, I found that element of it hard to swallow. It was competently written, and for the most part it kept the action coming. On the other hand, I found the title ironic, as it gave up its secrets earlier than I was expecting, leaving the end of the book a chore to complete. ( )

Really good novel with lots of twists and turns in the plot. All the action takes place within a week. First time I've tried a Robert Goddard book and certainly don't think it will be the last. ( )
